A limited edition sneaker collaboration by Onitsuka Tiger and Valentino was announced at Valentino’s Autumn/Winter 2020 Paris Menswear Collection and it took Paris Fashion Week by storm.
Onitsuka Tiger’s signature MEXICO 66™ SD sneaker has been reinterpreted by Valentino in the four colours that are iconic to the brand: neon yellow, neon pink, neon orange and white — probably the brightest palette we’ve seen since the Bruce Lee-style ones in yellow. This time though, the sneakers’ criss-cross bands have gone monochrome, and what stands out instead is a large hand-printed black Valentino “V” insignia on the side. The bold use of colour and branding is, of course, representative of the maison’s innovative style and brand. A special co-branded logo can be found on the shoe-tongue as well as on the insole.
The collection also includes Onitsuka Tiger’s signature style of white with blue, red and off-white accents.
Founded by Kihachiro Onitsuka in 1949, the made in Japan sports-inspired fashion brand known for its affordable trainers might be an unlikely brand for a collaboration with a haute couture fashion house such as Valentino. However, this collaboration might be the glow-up Onitsuka Tiger needs to propel it into hypebeast stardom.
The Onitsuka Tiger x Valentino will launch in Summer 2020 and will be available at select retail stores worldwide and on Valentino.com. The ‘tricolor’ model will be available at select Onitsuka Tiger stores and online.
