Which came first: the bag design or the muse? Whatever the answer to that age-old philosophical conundrum, the one thing that is undisputed is this — bags created and named after celebrity muses often enjoy notable popularity and longevity (who hasn’t heard of the Birkin?). But what is it about naming a bag after a celebrity that skyrockets its demand with the masses?
This Spring-Summer 2020, Saint Laurent, luxury purveyor and voice of all things cool, is launching the Kaia Satchel — so named after Kaia Gerber; superstar offspring of fashion legend Cindy Crawford. Offered in two sizes; Mini and Small, this runway hit comes either in smooth leather, matte lizard skin or python with an adjustable shoulder strap. It also features the iconic YSL cassandre logo on its closure flap and suede interiors in its two compartments and card slot.
While not exactly the most novel of designs, the classic silhouette of the Kaia Satchel is meant to be embraced as a new essential — practically-sized for everyday and suitable for work and play. Perhaps its timeless appearance is meant to commemorate as well as parallel the long-spanning career of Crawford and Gerber’s stratospheric rise in the industry. And if that’s anything to go by, the bag in all variations is sold out on its website, following on the trailblazing heels of its muse when it comes to popularity.
It also helps that during this recently concluded Fashion Week, the bag has also been seen on Kaia herself, Rosé of Blackpink, Lucy Boynton, and Hailey Bieber, giving it all the attention in the world of social media exposure it can possibly get, and leaving little for anyone to wonder of its impressive cult following.
By the time you’re reading this, it’s probably a little late to make an online purchase for it, but you may still be able to snag one if you head down to your nearest Saint Laurent boutique this minute!
