7 Enriching Activities For Your Little Ones To Enjoy During The School Holiday

It’s been rough the past few months, and while they may not be as aware of the current issues we face, children are also bearing the brunt of being apart from their friends and being stuck at home all the time. For those of you with little ones in your lives, please remember to shower them with a little extra love this period — here are a few things that could help.

1. De Kinder Club

A European-inspired preschool education centre, De Kinder Club has been creating learning kits for parents to use with their little ones at home throughout this circuit breaker period. With a multi-disciplinary approach focusing on experiential learning, each kit contains several innovative and engaging activities for parents and children to enjoy together.

Each kit contains everything needed for parents to engage their children — materials, worksheets, lesson plans and step-by-step guides. While there are videos that can guide parents along, children aren’t required to watch any digital content, apart from fun, sing-a-long music videos!

Different learning boxes are catered to different age groups, and new themes are added every two weeks, keeping things fun and entertaining. Previous themes include the Life Cycle of a Chicken, Fluffy Sheep, Easter and Rainbow & Light! For parents who may need a little more personal time to work from home, Busy Boxes are also available that can engage kids in independent play for up to 2 hours.

More information on De Kinder Club can be found on their website, and enquiries on their Learning Kits can be made at their Facebook and Instagram.

6. The Lavender Spaceship Project

Started with the purpose of wanting to encourage young girls to pursue interests in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) fields, The Lavender Spaceship Project is a learning platform for girls aged 5 to 14. There’s a huge gender gap within the STEM industries, and the platform aims to bridge the gap and develop more interest in the field from a young age.

Sessions are personalised according to the interest and knowledge levels of each girl, and enrichment programmes include areas such as coding, robotics, and game design. Integrated STEM classes are available for younger girls between 5 to 7, and modules such as Coding with Scratch Jr, Introduction to Computer Science and Tactile Programming and Robotics with Ozobot bit will be covered.

More specialised enrichment programmes are available for girls aged 8 to 14. The overall duration of each programme varies, and can last from a minimum total of 3 hours to 10 hours, depending on the content being covered. Possible programmes include Video Game Design with Bloxels, Coding with Python, and various Robotics tasks, such as building your own robot and programming your drone to complete certain challenges. Our Editor-in-Chief’s daughter gave their Scratch Programming class a try, and she loved it!

7. LittleLives

Used by 14,000 educators across over a thousand schools, the core of LittleLives is a preschool management system that covers the operative and administrative aspects of the schools. Subsets of LittleLives include Little Family Room, Little Check In, LittlePoop and Little Academy, all of which contribute to the various aspects of the system.

With the recent increased need for Home-Based Learning, the platform was upgraded to allow schools to upload their HBL packages to the system, and in turn be accessed by parents at home to conduct lessons with their children. On the other hand, subsets such as LittlePoop and Little Family Room allow both parents and educators to keep track of a child’s health, growth and progress, providing a stable platform for communication between home and school.
