With more free time on our hands, many are resorting to upgrading and learning new skills to hone while they’re at home. You’ve probably seen many of your peers picking up skills like baking and cooking even when they have never stepped into their kitchen, while others spend their days working out on their mats. But have you ever considered picking up a new skill that’s out of the norm?

SkillsFuture  is a national movement that allows Singaporeans to pick up new skills — helping them to realise their goals and aspirations through a comprehensive system of education and training. Applicable to students and working adults — whether you’re just starting out or even a professional in your mid-career — SkillsFuture offers a diverse and expansive range of courses for you to choose from to master. As part of the nation’s effort to encourage Singaporeans to pick up a new skill, the Government will be crediting a one-off SkillsFuture Credit top-up of $500 to every Singapore Citizen aged 25 years and above as at 31 December 2020.

– Depending on your course, you’ll be able to claim most of them with your SkillFuture credits.

1. BASIC DOG GROOMING

You may have mastered the skill of trimming your own hair at home during Circuit Breaker, but have you ever thought of taking the next step to groom your furkid?

Ngee Ann Polytechnic is now offering a course to do just that. The Basic Dog Grooming course encompasses lessons on health and hygiene as well as the basics of styling your canine companions so that they look attractive and presentable.

Other important topics that will be covered within the course include the clipping and filing of your dog’s nails, maintaining dental hygiene and perform de-ticking of your dogs on your own. Who knows, you might do a better job than your groomers?

3. HOW TO BE A YOUTUBER

Let’s face it — being a YouTuber is an attractive job but it’s also one of the most competitive fields out there. In a vast sea of work by other content creators, the most challenging obstacle that you’ll face is to ensure that your brand and content actually do stand out.

And obviously, this course developed by Singapore Polytechnic doesn’t fall short on that. It’s basically titled ‘How To Be A YouTuber’ and it encompasses the basics of conceptualising, developing and pitching original ideas and stories for your own channel. You will also hone and apply the art of storytelling on your platform where you’ll also learn the importance and basics of marketing your channel for a more profitable future.

4. BAKE ARTISAN SOURDOUGH BREAD LIKE A PROFESSIONAL

Name someone who hasn’t started baking during the Circuit Breaker, we’ll wait. Now that you’ve mastered the skill of making your own Basque Cheesecake and Famous Amos Cookies, it’s time to take things up a notch and try baking your own artisan sourdough bread.

6. CODING FOR ALL

In this digital age, familiarising ourselves with coding is a key topic that could benefit us all in the future. Without coding, computers would literally do nothing — and now that we’re heavily reliant on our devices to work, learning more about the aspects of tech will open up a world of possibilities for us.

In this course, participants will be able to learn more about coding language, such as Python, and developing simple applications from scratch. Other topics that are also covered include fundamental constructs of coding, developing simple programs using a coding language, and more. It’s a simple and user-friendly approach to coding!
