Saint Laurent’s Latest Hobos Bags Are Practical, Unpretentious Luxury

Of late, the biggest bag trend isn’t about what shape it comes in, but how little you can cram into it (the lesser, the more trend-conscious). But in the tumultuous year that is 2020, all that is set to change (as with many other important things). This year, the once-beloved (popular first back in the noughties) one-bag-fits-all and even more silhouette — the Hobo — is back, and they’re better than ever.

Demi Moore as seen with a now-discontinued Saint Laurent Hobo bag.

Best known for its slouchy expandable body, reinforced shoulder strap, and so-named because its shape resembles an actual hobo’s bindle, they were a popular choice with many for a simple reason — they’re insanely practical.

But don’t be mistaken. These latest Hobo offerings from Saint Laurent aren’t the homebodies of their latest bags line-up — they come adorned with exquisite details that’ll match up with some of their more familiar formal styles. Scroll down to check them out.

Saint Laurent Hobo Tag

The Hobo Tag is all clean lines and restrained elegance, with reinforced stitching on its sides and a sturdy base that keeps it upright even when it’s completely empty. It’s also held together at the bag’s opening with golden rings attached with a tubular shoulder strap, that promises not to buckle under the weight of overpacking.

As the latest addition to the French luxury label’s Tag Line, you’ll find the familiar removable leather charm with the iconic YSL metal hardware dangling of its side, for nothing more than simply good measure.

These strike the perfect balance of smart-casual aesthetically, which we imagine will assimilate in any (or most) of your everyday settings. Available in Cognac or Black with Natural Canvas, those who consider themselves environmentally-conscious will also be glad to know that the Hobo Tag is made with vegetal leather. Going green is officially the new black, we’d say.

The Saint Laurent Hobo Tag (from $1,990) will be available in-stores and ONLINE from this July.

Saint Laurent Hobo Suzanne

The Hobo Suzanne is probably the most modernist (read: frills-free) handbag by Saint Laurent to date. It comes with nary any ostentatious branding (you will find the name embossing hidden on the handle base hardware) and follows the expected Hobo Bag codes for expandable slouchiness on its leather body.

Though, we’d suggest not to push it with stuffing this one silly, lest the gorgeous short jewel chain-handle it comes with gives way. A bag this pretty suggests delicate handling anyway, and you’ll find four versions — black leather, red opium leather, ivory leather, or the perennial favourite, crocodile-embossed nubuck — to choose from. It’s all class with none of the stuffy pretentiousness, so what’s not to love?

The Saint Laurent Hobo Suzanne (from $2,150) will be available in-stores and ONLINE from this July.

Saint Laurent Hobo Grace

The Hobo Grace is unapologetically huge. So huge in fact, that we’d bet you can actually fit your kitchen sink in it. It likewise comes unapologetically dripping in leather fringes so you know it’s laying all its cards on the table to tap into the Hobo Bag’s original bohemian sensibilities. Oh, and it also comes with a bold gold-tone chain handle with a YSL jewel charm along its length.

Available only in black lambskin with suede, because the world simply can’t accommodate two Hobo Graces, this is the must-have to add to your bag collection if you’re one for all things dramatic.

The Saint Laurent Hobo Grace ($2,390) will be available in-stores and ONLINE from this July.
