Google Launches Their All-New Smartphone — The Google Pixel 4a

For those who have been waiting for the next Google phone to launch, your prayers have been answered with the tech giant’s all-new addition to their Pixel phones — the Google Pixel 4a.

Although Google had announced plans to release two other phones — the Google Pixel 5 and Google Pixel 4a 5G — alongside the Pixel 4a, their release dates have been pushed to Fall with details still kept under wraps to accommodate the current launch of the Google Pixel 4a.

Still, that doesn’t mean its current launch is any less impressive. In true Google fashion, the Google Pixel 4a is an affordable alternative to its flagship Google Pixel 4, that is not only retailing at half its price at $499, but is also well-equipped with the great features of a Google Pixel smartphone which includes a 5.8-inch OLED display, HDR+ camera, and the very handy Google Assistant.

The Google Pixel 4a is available in Just Black with a matte finish on the rear and a 5.8-inch OLED display on the front. Unlike other front cameras where they are positioned in the top centre of the phone, the Pixel 4a features a punch-hole camera that sits on the top left corner of the phone, creating a less obstructive view of the display.

CAMERA CAPABILITIES

Built with the same cameras as the Pixel 4 with an all-new hole-punch design, the Pixel 4a not only gives you the ability to capture images in Portrait Mode but also in low lighting as well. Their Night Sight feature helps you to take low light photos without a flash as well as capture high-quality images of the night sky (including the stars) with Astrophotography — their newest function for Night Sight.

You can also take photos as it is seen in the viewfinder with the Live HDR+ function. Even in challenging lighting, the Live HDR+ will be able to give you a more accurate preview of what your image will look like before you capture it. It even provides you with dual exposure controls for you to adjust the overall brightness and shadow before shooting. This feature captures data live, making the shifts in highlights and colours more dramatic and significant than what you get from post-capture editing.

HELPFUL FEATURES

In addition to features like Recorder, which seamlessly saves and share transcriptions and recordings in English through Google Docs, the Pixel 4a has included helpful features such as the Personal Safety app.

The Personal Safety app is a feature developed by Google to automatically save and share your real-time information with the respective emergency services when activated.

Though the feature is subjected to work in selected countries, it is useful to have especially when it has a car crash detection ability, which uses information such as the phone’s location, motion sensors and nearby sounds to detect a possible severe car crash. Once the phone determines that a severe car crash has occurred, it will help to connect with emergency services to transmit your approximate location and car crash data for quick assistance.

ADAPTIVE BATTERY

You can rely on the Pixel 4a’s adaptive battery to limit the use of battery by infrequent apps. (Image courtesy of Google)

The Adaptive Battery is a standard by default for all Pixels, including the all-new Pixel 4a, and uses machine learning to determine which apps are infrequently used to limit their background battery usage. It is also able to predict when your phone will run out of battery before its next charge and reduce background activity further to keep your Pixel 4a powered longer.

NEW GOOGLE ASSISTANT

Introduced last year, the all-new Google Assistant is now more deeply integrated into the operating system and across the apps to make it more helpful and responsive. Whether you are at home, in the car or on the go, you can easily navigate your phone with just the sound of your voice.

Instead of having to type into the search bar, the new assistant is contextually responsive within apps to take you to your search results with the vocal request. For example, if you were looking for something within YouTube, all you need to do is activate Google Assistant and you’ll be brought straight to the respective results page.

ACCESSORISE WITH A RECYCLED PIXEL 4A FABRIC CASE

Given its simple Just Black style, it is no doubt that you would want to personalise your phone with a case of its own. With a commitment to observing sustainability in manufacturing, the new Google Pixel 4a Fabric Case is made from over 70% recycled material and uses a jacquard pattern to reduce the worries of wear and tear.

Entirely machine washable, the unique fabric case retails at $60 each and comes in three base colours — Basically Black, Static Grey and Blue Confetti — with beautiful pop colours on the lock button and a ‘G’ symbol to add vibrance and functionality to your phone case.
