Hip Xiong Photo Studio — SG’s Only Tintype Portrait Studio For Old-School Photos

Better and more advanced features in modern, digital photography may be all the rage now, but there is no denying that old photography methods have their equal charm as well. One such photo studio spearheading the revival of old school photography is Hip Xiong Photo Studio — a two-storey space located in Geylang opened by photographer and younger brother to Rozz Lee, Ryan Lee.

The studio’s name, which directly translates to ‘taking a picture’ in Hokkien, acts as a homage to traditional photo studios of yesteryear that were generally named in respective dialects. However, unlike other generational photo studios who have been around for years, Hip Xiong uses a 19th-century photography style, a historical image-making technique invented about 150 years ago, that uses the tinplate process to create tintype images.

Tintype photographs or portraits are made by creating a direct positive on a thin sheet of metal that is coated with a dark lacquer or enamel. This acts as a substrate where light-sensitive materials will be coated on. The end result is a high contrast image with a dark grey-black appearance formed by real silver.

Here’s a look at some of the photos you can expect to have taken at Hip Xiong Photo Studio.
