Monica Vinader x Doina Is a Sustainable Jewellery Collection With Plenty Of Vintage Flair

Sustainable fashion is getting mainstream and deservingly so, both as a timely trend and a necessary step towards the preservation of our planet; and things are looking up. Brands are starting to embrace the use of recycled materials, for one. You’ve heard of plant-based vegan leather, or fabrics made from recycled PET — so how about recycled metals?

Here’s one to know. Launched today, Monica Vinader debuts their first-ever collection made from 100% recycled Sterling Silver. The collection also happens to be an exciting collaboration with sustainable fashion influencer, Doina Ciobanu, featuring a series of 16 beautiful pieces that proudly showcase their signature 18 ct Gold and Rose Gold Vermeil, in designs reminiscent of vintage wear.

Before we get carried away looking at the inspirational campaign photos, it’s good to know that this partnership between the demi-fine jewellery brand and Doina has a cause as bold as those chunky bracelets you’re looking at — both parties are out to prove that good design and quality can go hand in hand, even with a sustainable collection. They got us convinced, alright.

Whether it’s a necklace, ring, or bracelet, the aesthetic appeal of the collection lies in how it’s inspired by vintage heirloom jewellery, particularly, the glamour of 1950’s Italy and its rich textures and architectural shapes. Throughout the series, you’ll notice the generous usage of gold on hammered metal and woven designs, with the latter surprisingly lightweight and fluid, resting easily on your neck or wrist. That timeless quality inspires longevity; we’re meant to wear them for as long as we can, thus reducing impulse buys as we reconsider the existing pieces in our wardrobe.

Interchangeable design elements also add to the versatility and longevity of the collection. We’re meant to play it up, and enjoy that process of mix-and-match. A woven fine chain necklace looks spectacular on its own, or, add on a pearl pendant charm for a breezy look. Other fancy combinations we love include the Green Onyx pendant, added to either the drop or huggie earrings, as well as a vintage-looking slender Torc necklace that curls around your neck, a look that’s accentuated by having subtle charms dangling off its edge.

All this is especially timely, given the brand’s announcement to move completely away from mined materials, in order to embrace Recycled Sterling Silver by end 2020.  Colour us impressed. With a collection this gorgeous to herald its new commitment, we can’t wait to see what else the brand has in store.
