Logomania’s quite a divisive, circular trend — the fashion elite wholly embraced it in the 90s, as the culture of “seen and be seen” paparazzi photos reigned supreme, though we later collectively scorned the tacky element on our clothes and accessories. The last couple of years though has seen its resurgence, and with streetwear trends infiltrating into the world of luxury, designers from Gucci to Versace aren’t afraid to go big and bold with their brand names.
No doubt, Louis Vuitton and their signature LV Monogram canvas has been a staple of the luxury house, though this season, it looks like they’re willing to bet on something new — the subtle monogram. Presenting the new additions to the Monogram Empreinte line, which sees the maison’s iconic Monogram signature, now embossed on supple calf leather.
Created in November 2010, the Monogram Empreinte is Louis Vuitton’s first permanent supple embossed leather line. In fact, “Empreinte” means imprint in English, while the line desires to convey the rich heritage of Louis Vuitton in a discreet design that’s sure to appeal to lovers of subtle luxury. Obvious only at an angle as it glints in the light, the soft impression further highlights the leather’s finely textured grain, while the bags of course feature the hallmarks of LV craftsmanship: quality saddle stitching, tonal dye-ing, and other low-key details.
This season, we’re seeing the prints in some of the house’s signature silhouettes — the Montsouris Backpack from 1994 is quite the standout for us, with its practical shape and size, while adding on to the idea of everyday luxe. Very 90s style, complete with thin straps and a vintage-look gold buckle, the backpack is also offset with a playful LV charm in tone-on-tone matching leather.
More lady-like handbags include the Art Deco-inspired Neo Alma, the modern structured bucket bag style of the NéoNoé, and the circular Boite Chapeau Souple, which happens to be Nicolas Ghesquière’s reinterpretation of the classic hat box.
Additionally, colours this season are also kept at a minimal — Noir (black), Creme (cream) and Tourterelle (light brown) are seen across the new bags, with the exception being a red Cherry Berry for the Neo Alma BB silhouette.
If you prefer a more roomy style, you can’t go wrong with the OnTheGo Tote, a stylish oversized number that’s versatile enough for both the work week and weekends. You can also carry it by its short straps, or over your shoulder with the two longer straps. For a more contemporary yet just-as-practical style, look to the Bumbag, a youthful piece that’ll hold all your essentials, while still being surprisingly roomy for a couple more. If you’ve ever been wary of logomania and the monogram, these latest Louis Vuitton styles are the perfect way to not show off.
The Louis Vuitton Monogram Empreinte Collection is available at all Louis Vuitton boutiques and on louisvuitton.com. Prices POA.
