The Vans & MoMA Collaboration Features Artwork By Salvador Dalí, Claude Monet and More

Vans is always launching new collaborations, and next on their list is a creative collection with The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). In a two-part release, the skate brand has come together with the Manhattan-based museum to bring us pieces inspired by the artwork of several iconic contemporary artists. The first wave will be released this September, presenting work by Salvador Dalí, Wassily Kandinsky and Claude Monet, while the second wave will be released later in November.

Vans and MoMA Collection — MoMA Brand Series

Starting with a 10-piece MoMA branded selection, we see a colourful transformation of Vans’ signature checkerboard print across long and short sleeve tees, a cinch backpack and the recognisable ComfyCush Old Skool and Era sneakers, all inspired by the museum’s recent expansion.

Vans and MoMA Collection — Salvador Dalí Series

First on the lineup of the artist-inspired collections is a series based on Salvador Dalí’s The Persistence of Memory, one of the surrealist’s most well-known paintings. On top of a graphic printed longsleeve and teal hoodie, the collection includes a pair of the Old Skool Twist, fitted with a print of the painting on the side panels under the brown suede upper, complete with a signature black side-stripe and a distorted foxing stripe that seems to be melting off the sneaker.

Vans and MoMA Collection — Wassily Kandinsky Series

Also in the collection is a series inspired by abstract artist Wassily Kandinsky, with a short sleeve tee, crewneck, snapback hat and a pair of sneakers depicting his 1923 work, Orange. Made during his time teaching at the Bauhaus, a lot of his work during that period focused on precise lines and geometric shapes, and Orange incidentally features a traditional checkerboard pattern that has become a signature of the skate brand. The Classic Slip-On featured in this collection displays the piece when placed side-by-side, with the artwork covering the canvas upper.

Vans and MoMA Collection — Claude Monet Series

The last artist featured in this initial release is Claude Monet, one of the founders of French Impressionist painting. Showcasing a selection of pieces from his Water Lilies series, the collection features a hat, fleece and backpack displaying the paintings from his later years, from 1914 to 1926. The Authentic is covered in blue, purple and green tones on the upper, and fitted with a traditional white rubber sole.

Vans and MoMA Collection — Kid’s and Toddlers Series

Not forgetting the little ones, the collaboration also offers an exclusive kid’s and toddlers range, focusing on colour and interactivity. The pale yellow Classic Slip-On has been developed with hook-and-loop shapes, encouraging children to customise their shoes in their own creative way. On the other hand, the Old Skool features a bold colourblocking aesthetic in primary and secondary colours, offering an opportunity for kids to learn about colour theory and colour mixing — each pair also includes a special colour wheel hang tag.

The first wave of the Vans and MoMA collection will be available 30 September at vans.com.sg and at select Vans retailers. It will also be available at MoMA Design Store locations, store.moma.org, the Nordstrom Flagship store in New York City and nordstrom.com. Pricing TBA.
