Uniqlo U’s Fall/Winter 2020 Collection Features Understated Classics At Their Best

You know what deserves to be a meme? The fact that if you look into a typical Singaporean male’s wardrobe, you’ll find plenty of Uniqlo t-shirts and shorts — well, that and those SAF PT kits they wear as pajamas. These’s good reason though. The men vouch for their extreme comfort and long-lasting wear, while we don’t think ubiquity immediately spells ‘basic’. After all, this season’s Uniqlo U collection makes basics look undeniably cool.

Designed by Christophe Lemaire and his Uniqlo R&D team in Paris, the line has been an ever-evolving staple we look forward to every new season. The Uniqlo U Fall/Winter 2020 collection doesn’t disappoint. You’ll spot those famous comfy tees, along with capsule wardrobe-worthy shirts, pants, skirts and long-sleeved tops, with technical details and sleek cuts that further elevate these classic styles.

Denim Shirt Coat, $79.90, Denim Long Sleeve Long Shirt Dress, $79.90 ; Cotton Oversized Bow Tie Long Sleeve Shirt, $39.90, Jersey Relaxed Pants, $59.90.
Broadcloth Long Sleeve Shirt, $39.90 ; Middle Gauge Mock Neck Long Sleeve Sweater, $59.90.

The stunning lineup includes 34 items for women, 36 for men, and 4 accessories, in easy styles that will go with existing items in your wardrobe. Here, the campaign images are shot against varying shades of blue — all to highlight the palette of neutrals and skin-like tones, and the occasional pop of muted warm tones, which evoke a sense of cosiness, whether you’re staying in or heading out.

We’ve featured the key looks here for you to take notes of before the collection hits stores on 18 September.

Viscose Bow Tie 3/4 Sleeve Dress, $79.90 ; Crew Neck Short Sleeve T-shirt, $14.90, High Rise Boyfriend Jeans, $59.90 ; Double Pocket Oversized Long Sleeve Shirt, $39.90, High Rise Boyfriend Jeans, $59.90 ; Crew Neck Long Sleeve Sweatshirt, $49.90, Sweat Pants, $49.90.

Minimalism seems to have taken on a new purpose recently; not only is it a style preference, but the idea of clean and functional separates that we can play around with is the very idea of a modern, sustainable wardrobe. Uniqlo U aces this with classics and inter-seasonal pieces, most of which are presented in neutral tones. A couple of gray-blue items exist, in a dress or shirt, while satins and crinkled viscose add a subtle texture to the minimalist silhouettes.

Some of our favourites include an oversized long sleeve shirt with a bow detail, a satin midi skirt, as well as the ribbed knitwear that’s a staple of Uniqlo U’s Fall/Winter series. The dresses are kept relaxed, knits hug the body without being unflattering. Several styles echo menswear construction as well, including a boxy wool-blend jersey jacket, or a shirt and pants combo, though these are cut to fit a more feminine figure.

Mercerized Cotton Long Sleeve Mock Neck T-Shirt, $19.90, Denim Pencil Long Skirt, $59.90 ; Low Gauge Turtleneck Long Sleeve Sweater, $59.90 ; Extra Fine Merino Ribbed Crew Neck Long Sleeve Sweater, $49.90, Satin Midi Skirt, $59.90 ; Cotton Oversized Bow Tie Long Sleeve Shirt, $39.90.
Ribbed Round Neck Short Sleeve T-Shirt, $19.90, Jersey Relaxed Pants, $59.90 ; Trench Coat, $199.90 ; Wool Blend Jersey Jacket, $199.90, Jersey Relaxed Pants, $59.90 ; Crepe Bow Tie Half Sleeve Dress, $79.90.

Men’s

Tailored Jacket, $99.90, Wool Blended Jersey Pants, $79.90 ; TBC ; Oversized Crew Neck Short Sleeve T-shirt, $19.90, Regular Fit Jeans, $59.90 ; Corduroy Wide Fit Stand Collar Long Sleeve Shirt, $39.90.

For the men, we’re looking at a mix of casuals and more classic styles, that includes outerwear you can use to layer up your look. The inspiration here is European youth street culture of decades ago, hence sportswear influences of boxy cuts and oversized silhouettes. The colour palette here is a little more varied than the Women’s, though neutrals of black, white, and dark blue still reign, albeit with pops of burnt orange and bordeaux red for contrast.

As this drop’s more suited for cooler climes, you’ll see corduroy, wool-blend fleece and wool jersey materials making an appearance too. Some of our favourites, other than a refined top-and-pants combo, has to be the outerwear. A boxy half coat with an oversized collar, for instance, a padded corduroy blouson with a rounded silhouette, or a tailored jacket that can make a plain t-shirt look instantly dapper.

TBC ; Oversized Crew Neck Half Sleeve T-shirt, $19.90, Corduroy Regular Fit Straight Pants, $59.90 ; Oversized Crew Neck Short Sleeve T-shirt, $19.90, Selvedge Regular Fit Jeans, $59.90 ; Merino Blend Mock Neck Long Sleeve Sweater, $59.90, Regular Fit Jeans, $59.90.
Padded Quilted Coat, $199.90 ; Corduroy Padded Blouson, $99.90 ; Wool Blend Fleece Jacket, $149.90, Light Flannel Wide Fit Check Long Sleeve Shirt, $39.90 ; U Half Coat, $199.90.
