These Are Gen-Z’s Favourite Beauty Items You Can Shop For During Sephora’s Black Friday Sale

If you’ve been keeping up with the endless cycle of sales, or maybe targeted by ads all up on your social media feed, here’s the non-news — the Black Friday Sales are nearly upon us. For that, any beauty lover on the hunt for a deal would have Sephora’s Black Friday Sale on the top of their lists. Happening from 26 November to 27 November, that’s where you’ll get up to 20% off site-wide and storewide, particularly ideal to stock up on your holy grail favourites, or get an item you’ve always wanted to try.

Here’s something different though — we kind of know what our friends, beauty bloggers, and beauty editors are raving about, what about the items that people are actually buying? We took a quick dive into Sephora’s real data on their shoppers’ habits, and here’s what we got: a cool look at the Sephora shopping experience, through the eyes of a Gen-Z customer.

In summary, we’re looking at value-for-money beauty items that are easy on the wallet — including lots of Sephora Collection essentials that may surprise you — as well as the best of the cult items that are worth your buck. Also interesting: watermelon. Here are the hottest bestsellers you might be inspired to add to cart too.

SKINCARE

Clear Skin goals

Mario Badescu Drying Lotion, $36; Pixi Glow Tonic (100ml), $24 ; Caudalie Vinopure Clear Skin Purifying Toner, $35

The trend here is clearer than ever: raved-about beauty items that work, and affordable too even if you’re on a budget. Ranking high among the skincare bestsellers snapped up by Gen-Z shoppers are items that promise clear skin, and yet, we can safely say that the desire for balanced skin and a cure for maskne rings true at all ages.

Mario Badescu is quite the trending brand among this demographic, where the Drying Lotion and In The Clear Set offer easy fixes to banish unpleasant zits, thanks to that popular salicylic acid-based product. Pixi’s Glow Tonic and Caudalie’s Vinopure Toner are winners too for delivering on gentle daily exfoliation.

Value-For-Money

Sephora Collection White Pearl Brightening Invisilk Mask, $4; Rose Ultra Hydrating Invisilk Mask, $4; Marine Algae Hydrating Invisilk Mask, $4

Sephora Collection Original Cleansing Face Wipes in Watermelon, $11 ; Facial Spray, $12

To be honest, we’ve never tried any of Sephora’s Invisilk Masks even though we’ve often admired their pretty packaging on the shelf. At $4, and with a ‘Buy 3 Get 1 Free’ deal, they might be quite the steal now that we know how many spots they’ve managed to snag on Gen-Z’s top 10 list. These natural fibre masks are infused with different active ingredients meant to address specific skin concerns, so again, a quick fix is in order.

Elsewhere, on-the-go items include these Cleansing Face Wipes get the job done with a heavenly watermelon scent, and the Gen Z-favourite brand, Mario Badescu, in particular, a soothing Facial Spray.

The Splurge

Fresh Soy Face Cleanser, $63

A surprising entry in Sephora’s Gen-Z favourites, mainly due to its price — everything else costs less than $40. Then again, we get it. Fresh’s Soy Face Cleanser is “cult status” for a reason: it’s unbelievably gentle, non-irritating, effective and makeup-removing, while managing to soothe and tone unbalanced skin. It’s that good. And now that you might get it at a 20% discount, why not?

MAKEUP

eyeliner on fleek

KVD Vegan Beauty Tattoo Liner in Trooper, $32; Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner, $34

Our constant face mask-wearing has made us more experimental with daring, full eye looks. The first thing that always runs out though? Eyeliner. You can’t go wrong with these tried-and-tested, long-wearing formulas that’ll last you through sweat, humidity, and tears (thanks 2020).

plush lips

Fenty Beauty Mattemoiselle Plush Matte Lipstick in Spanked, $29; Burt’s Bees Moisturizing Lip Balm in Vanilla Bean, $9

Quite obviously, we want hydrated lips that don’t get dry and flaky, with or without lipstick. Fenty Beauty’s Mattemoiselle lipstick has long been a winner for us when it comes to pigmented matte lipsticks that look great after a full day, so no surprises here. The Burt’s Bees entry was a surprise though — it’s just $9! We’d normally expect more due to its 100% natural, shea butter and vanilla formula, but hey, here’s an underrated value-for-money find for you.

cult favourites

NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer in Custard, $46; Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder, $70; Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray, $48

You know what, Gen-Zs and Millennials aren’t that different after all! Because these are some of our favourite beauty items too. Laura Mercier’s Translucent Loose Setting Powder is a staple for its translucent, ultra-fine pigments that give the best filtered face effect; the NARS concealer has great coverage that doesn’t crack; and Urban Decay’s All Nighter Setting Spray is a necessity for lasting and transfer-proof makeup, with or without face masks.

BEAUTY TOOLS

the undisputed champ

Beautyblender The Original Beautyblender, $32

Do we really need to talk about the Beautyblender? It’s a strange-looking beauty tool that even the boyfriends recognise. If you’ve yet to try this cosmetic sponge applicator though, a sale would be the best time to invest in this rather high-priced tool. For those used to applying foundation with their fingers, the chief selling point here is a streak-free finish with minimal product waste, as it’s able to easily blend out your base for a flawless finish.

daily essentials

Sephora Collection Daily Makeup Brush Cleaner, $12; False Eyelash Glue, $9; Organic Cotton Pads, $5; Hand Cleansing Gel Watermelon, $4

For other beauty tools you need, Gen-Z customers seem to trust Sephora Collection, a lot. From the products here, we can see why. These are inexpensive, and “low-risk” — they don’t have to be outstanding, but they’ve got to be reliable. From cotton pads, to a daily brush cleaner, you’re looking at the best ones you might have overlooked while eyeing those other bigger beauty brands. Not anymore.
