No Jedi mind tricks here, this is the Star Wars exhibition you’ve been looking for. Say hello there to STAR WARS™ Identities: The Exhibition, a world-touring exhibition that will make its final stop at the ArtScience Museum in Singapore, from 30 January to 13 June 2021.
The exhibition will present close to 200 authentic artefacts — that is, props, models, costumes, and artwork — from the original Star Wars films, brought to us by the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art archive. Familiar items include our favourite droids, BB-8 and R2-D2, life-sized models of Chewie and Yoda, as well as the original Boba Fett and Stormtrooper costumes. You’ll also be able to marvel at the series’ epic star ships too, including the Millennium Falcon and the Star Destroyer.
Developed and produced by Montreal’s X3 Productions in collaboration with Lucasfilm Ltd., it focuses largely on the Skywalker saga, and follows the story of Luke and Anakin Skywalker, one of the most iconic father-son duos in cinematic history and pop culture alike, from their origins on Tatooine to the friends and mentors they meet on their hero’s journey.
Rather than static displays though, STAR WARS™ Identities is curated to explore “the science of identity through the characters of Star Wars”. Each guest embarks on a customised, interactive quest to both gain knowledge of the Star Wars universe, and discover their own distinct identities — you might learn more about yourself in the process.
“Through the exploration of the characters and worlds of Star Wars, this interactive exhibition connects us with themes that can resonate with our own sense of self, familial identity and shared experience. In Singapore, the exhibition will engage that connection… fantasy meets reality, with a dash of reflection and adventure,” says George Lucas, creator of Star Wars.
The STAR WARS™ Identities Experience
It’s clear that the main draw here is for Star Wars fans to be able to see, first-hand, the hundreds of props, models, costumes, and artwork that goes into the original Star Wars films. These include the original (1977 – 1983) and prequel (1999 – 2005) trilogies, the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars™, as well as Star Wars: The Force Awakens™. On top of that, you’ll be delighted to find early concept drawings or storyboards, plenty of behind-the-scenes items that represent the marvel of filmmaking that went into the expansive fandom.
All these are woven into the overarching theme of identity, as the exhibition aims to answer the profound question of “what force shapes you?”. To discover this, STAR WARS™ Identities divides the space into three major sections: the characters’ origins (Origins), the influences that shaped them (Influences), and the personal choices that altered their lives (Choices). Original content and “making of” featurettes alike will be on hand to explore the development of your favourite and most iconic Star Wars characters.
