The Doraemon Exhibition Arrives at the National Museum of Singapore — Its First Global Showcase Outside of Japan

It seems like just yesterday when the National Museum of Singapore played host to a lawn full of Doraemon(s) and their magic tools. This coming November though, the museum is set to feature the beloved cat robot yet again, in an exciting exhibition of original drawings, modern art and more dedicated entirely to Doraemon.

The Doraemon Exhibition will make its debut outside of Japan for the first time at the National Museum of Singapore from 5 November 2022 to 5 February 2023. It will bring together a selection of contemporary artworks that reinterprets Doraemon in our changing world, while showcasing its cultural impact since its birth in 1970.

First held in 2002, the Doraemon Exhibition was restaged in 2017 at the Mori Arts Center Gallery in Tokyo and has since toured over eight cities in Japan, with the most recent held in Okayama earlier this year. The upcoming showcase in Singapore will be the first global edition featuring distinctive artworks from 28 leading contemporary Japanese artists and arts groups such as Takashi Murakami, Mika Ninagawa, and Yoshitomo Nara, with their take on Doraemon through paintings, sculptures, graphics, and photography.

In addition to the artworks, a selection of original drawings and sketches by Doraemon creator, the late Mr Fujiko will also be on display. These pieces from the Fujiko F Fujio Museum will be part of a specially dedicated feature of the exhibition in its first-ever public showcase in Asia.

We hope that this exhibition will inspire and uplift our visitors from all walks of life, and evoke many fond personal memories with Doraemon,” said Chung May Khuen, Director of the National Museum of Singapore.

Visitors to The Doraemon Exhibition will also enjoy an exclusive line-up of Doraemon merchandise, including the Fujiko F Fujio Museum’s and uniquely Singapore versions of original Doraemon collectibles. More details on these, as well as the artworks on display and special programmes, to be announced closer to the opening of the exhibition.
