Expect whimsical prints and bunny cut-outs across Kipling’s latest playful collection, dreamt up by none other than South Korean fashion designer Minju Kim. The bubbly designer first enthralled us on the first season of Next In Fashion, and has been making waves in the industry since then for her imaginative point of view.
This Kipling x Minju Kim collaboration marks her first bag co-creation, and despite what the fairytale flair and bold colours are telling us otherwise, these bags and accessories are also inspired by the dark fantasy Tim Burton film, Edward Scissorhands.
“When people think of Scissorhands, they think darkness and sadness, but I think differently. The scene where Edward went to school, played with the paper and made a garland inspired me to make my own. The print displayed on the bags is cut from paper like Edward, which I then transformed into a print,” says Minju when asked about her unique take. The print had also appeared across voluminous dresses and tops in her Fall-Winter 2021 collection.
This current Kipling collection sees the bold bi-coloured garland design across backpacks, crossbody bags, tote bags, and even a bright blue luggage with more of the contrasting printed pattern on the fabric liner of the hard shell case. We’re also getting Kipling’s signature Art M in a red-and-white print, complete with a bunny keyring that’s consistent across the rest of the collection.
Three new silhouettes are introduced as well, starting with the Dajung belt bag, a youthful design that puts together three small pouches linked by a pink belt, ideal for your phone, earphones, and other small accessories. The familiar Delia Kim backpack has a new oval front pocket, while there’s the everything-in Jihoon tote bag, entirely designed by Minju, with a shorter top handle, front pocket, and fun drawstring closure.
