Review: What The NYLON Team Thinks Of The YSL All Hours Foundation

The YSL All Hours liquid foundation launched two weeks ago and I tried it on a few personalities, each of them with a distinct skin tone. The great thing about this product is that it comes in 22 shades, and Singapore is one of the markets bringing in the full range of colours (unusual for our small population but a very good thing!). So every time a new “hero” product launches, I always want to try it on real girls — like the NYLON team.

Our typical work day has us putting on a foundation in the morning, and praying that it lasts though hours sitting at our desks, trudging out to lunch under the heat and humidity that is Singapore weather, and any evening activities like press events or dinner parties. Here’s what we have to say:

I wrote the original article for this product, and so got the brief and did the research; which means I know all the benefits that this foundation claims. Firstly, did I find my match? Yes of course; there are 22 shades and I have my YSL number memorised by heart: 20. Basically, any YSL base makeup with the number 20 (and for this foundation: B20). The cream blends in easily and literally disappears on my skin. I like to pat it in with a cushion compact sponge, just for the convenience of it, but it works; the product creates as good a finish that my skin can have. Dark rings and pigmentation lighten, pores are minimised, redness around the nose reduces, and veins become much less obvious. Overall, my skin evened out, which is exactly what a good foundation should do. Did it last? It actually really did — from morning, all through the day, through dinner with friends; and when I finally got home and took a look at myself in the mirror at 10pm, my skin still looked fresh. It’s a miracle. Disclaimer though: I have generally decent skin, so this product fared well for me (as many products do), but not all my colleagues were as successful. Read on.

Put a high coverage foundation in front of me, and I’ll definitely try it. Not that I have a lot to cover up, but it’s just a personal preference when it comes to my base makeup. That’s why I was pretty stoked to try the YSL Beauty All Hours liquid foundation, especially because I found the Touche Eclat Le Teint and Youth Liberator Serum Foundation to be so amazing. First impressions: this one has the same floral fragrance as the other YSL foundations, which I like, and blends easily with minimal streaking or patchiness. The coverage is nice and matte as promised, without appearing chalky. Not as luminous as some of my other preferred foundations, but that’s not a big deal. The real test though, is whether it lasts for all hours. At the end of the workday, it’s still holding up okay, but to be honest, my complexion doesn’t look as flawless as I thought it would. A slight touchup is still required, but I do find that my skin looks less oily as compared to when I have other foundations on. Overall, still one that I’m probably going to be using quite often.

Amelia Tan, Associate Editor
ameliaI have tons of makeup to try every day (yep, the evidence is right there), but I genuinely get excited when it’s YSL — their makeup’s usually pricey, but I do love the lipsticks and swear by the Mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils, and really, no one can resist those gilded cases right! So I was pumped (not a pun) to give their liquid foundation a try too! It so happens that I had a bad skin week and was desperately trying out ways to get rid of my blemishes while also covering them up during the day, and the YSL All Hours foundation came in really handy. Firstly, the coverage was great — I usually prefer more sheer coverage honestly, but this time, I needed all the help I could get. When I patted it on using a cushion sponge, it blended in with my skin beautifully, while also hiding any redness and bumps, and didn’t turn out cakey despite the layers of product. Not the lightest texture, but quite comfortable, really. The finish was even and natural too, a soft matte that isn’t powdery, with just the right glow that mimics any dream skin. After a whole day in an air-conditioned environment though, while I noticed that while it definitely stayed in place, my skin felt a little dry and less fresh than it looked in the morning. Maybe I should have kept a hydrating mist by my desk? Still, it doesn’t take away from the great coverage; I was quite happy that I could walk around with better-than-what-it-really-is skin without feeling insecure at all!

My skin reacts negatively to majority of beauty products on the market, even to those that were made specifically for sensitive skin. Now that you’re aware, I’ll start with the bad news: this foundation left my forehead red and itchy after a few hours of wear. I’m pretty sure the sole culprit was the fragrance in the formula, which sits relatively high on the ingredient list. For that reason, I tend to select products that are completely devoid of fragrance and aromatic essential oils. That aside, I really liked its buildable coverage. I’m not someone who’s blessed with naturally clear skin, so it’s best to have a foundation that can do the most. This one hid every trace of dark eye circles, acne, scars, shadows, veins and redness, so I didn’t even need a concealer by the time I was done with my whole face. It leaves a matte finish, but still looks glowy and fresh somehow, and it didn’t start caking when I added more foundation to my problem areas. If my skin weren’t this reactive, the YSL All Hours Foundation could have been the one.

I really like the scent of the foundation, not sure why but it somehow reminds me of honeydew? Haha. I managed to attain a nice smooth canvas with only one pump. The product itself feels light on the skin, as though I don’t have foundation on when I touch my face. I didn’t think the foundation looked matte on me as there was a little glow to the face, and I quite liked that. Overall, in my opinion, the product looks beautiful on the skin (but it’s not as non-transferable as it claims to be — it rubbed off on my clothes!).

Being someone who prefers the minimal look, I often opt out of wearing foundation to avoid the “overdone” cake face — so my morning and night routine is quite simple. In saying this, I’ve struggled to find a product that is lightweight with enough coverage to mask my problem areas. That is, until I used the YSL All Hours Liquid Foundation. I used a pea-sized amount to blot my T-zone area and blended it in using my fingertips. My first thought was how smooth my complexion looked and how easy the application was – with minimal effort! The real test for me was if the one layer I applied would last me all day, and how my pores would react to the foundation. Thankfully, the long-lasting wear surpassed my expectations, leaving my skin feeling fresh with only a minor flare up of my pores. Overall, I was impressed with the coverage and wasn’t left deterred from wearing it again.

I’ll start off by saying that the coverage is really fantastic. The downside to that is the consistency of the product, which goes on pretty thick. Too thick to use as a daily foundation. I used it on my entire face for about half the week and realised that I had a slight breakout after. It also doesn’t seem to last as long as my regular foundation, and I usually need a touch-up before the end of the day, despite setting it. However, it’s an incredibly effective concealer, and I’ve been using it as such ever since. I only need a very tiny amount to see good coverage. Also, it smells nice.

phyllis
The shade I picked out was BD45, a warm tone that leaves my skin looking a little bronzed, which is always a good thing if I want to achieve Kim K’s bronzy tan look. I get pretty high coverage with just a small amount of product and there wasn’t really a need for me to use my concealer in the next step. However, I do feel that the foundation dries up quickly, in a sense that if you do not immediately blend the foundation out evenly, it will result in uneven patches (at least for me because the shade I chose was bronzy). But, true to its name, the foundation stays on throughout the day, which is one of the important qualities I look out for in foundations.

M.A.C Is Sending Plenty Of New Nudes Our Way

M.A.C and Nicki Minaj go way back – beginning in 2010 with the Pink 4 Friday lipstick to celebrate the launch of her Pink Friday album, and followed by her two campaigns as Viva Glam ambassador: in 2012 with Ricky Martin, and a solo run in 2013. All the colours she’s launched so far have been unabashedly pink – nicely in line with her Harajuku Barbie persona, we suppose – but in 2017, all that’s set to change.

NICKI-MINAJ_BEAUTY_RGB_300

Yes, it’s all about the nudes this time around, and we’re super stoked, obviously. This latest collaboration sees two limited edition M.A.C x Nicki Minaj nude lipsticks: Nicki’s Nude, a soft coral pink, and The Pinkprint, a mid-tone creamy pink, both in Amplified finishes.

NICKI-MINAJ_AMBIENT_RGB_300

And all this is just the beginning, according to this tweet from Minaj herself. There’ll be plenty more of M.A.C x Minaj for 2018, and we are so ready for all of that. In the meantime, M.A.C is very kindly launching these two Nicki Minaj lip colours with a whole range of nude lipsticks, lipglosses and lip pencils, covering both brand new and familiar shades.

This Is Not A Drill: McDonald’s Nasi Lemak Burger Might Just Be Making A Comeback!

Isn’t this the best news you’ve heard all day? Well, we don’t know about you, but we sure as hell are jumping with joy when we saw that news of the McDonald’s Nasi Lemak Burger will be returning back on the menu. According to 8Days, they received a lil (okay, major!) tip-off from an unknown but reliable source who spilled the beans that McDonald’s reinterpretation of one of Singapore’s classic soul food will be making a comeback, along with the Chendol McFlurry and Bandung McFizz, at the end of August at all McDonald’s outlets.

Nasi-Lemak-Burger

Millions of Singaporeans probably have their hopes raised way up high right now, especially for those who did not even get a taste of the delightful burger, so to that mysterious insider: this news is a huge claim to say so confidently, and if it happens to be a scam, just know that you’ll be the most hated person in the whole of Singapore.
However, it seems like there is a high possibility that this is true, given that the representative from McDonald’s who spoke with 8Days did not give a confirmation NOR shoot down the prospect of it entirely. Plus, the whole concept of creating locally inspired dishes to celebrate National Day and the taste of the burger itself received positive reviews and overwhelming support island-wide, so McDonald’s, can you feel the love from everyone?
McDonalds_local_menu

Here at NYLON, we braved the long queues during the lunch peak hours, and we almost even exceeded our break time, but it was all worth it as we sunk our teeth into the burger that’s packed with a juicy chicken patty, golden fried egg, caramelized onions, fresh cucumbers, and the sweet and spicy, but bearable yet addictive sambal sauce, in between two toasted semolina buns. We had a major food coma after.
Although McDonald’s came up with Eggcellent McSpicy to take over the short-lived Nasi Lemak Burger, it was not enough to quell our disappointment upon hearing news that it was going to be taken down when it didn’t even last on the menu for more than two weeks, leaving our taste buds craving for more.
We’ve spoken, so everything is now in the hands of McDonald’s. We trust that our favourite fast food chain will make a wise decision and bring us the good news we all want to hear, so stay tuned for further updates!

YouTuber Jenn Im Has Just Launched Her Very Own Clothing Line

From Michelle Phan’s EM Cosmetics to Huda Kattan’s Huda Beauty and Samantha Maria’s NovemKnight clothing line, our favourite YouTubers have ventured out into the world, seeking new ways to tap on their creativity and to stay relevant in the industry. By now, we’re pretty familiar with the numerous collections that have been created for the masses, not just dedicated to loyal fans. The latest YouTube sensation to jump on board? It’s none other than Clothes Encounters’ Jenn Im.

If you’ve never heard of Jenn Im, you’re probably living under a boulder, far from Internet access. With almost 2 million subscribers on YouTube and 1.5 million followers on Instagram, it wouldn’t be wrong to brand Jenn Im as YouTube royalty. She started her channel in 2010, sharing fashion tips with her audience and gradually branched out to beauty and lifestyle in the span of 7 years. Having partnered with fashion, beauty and lifestyle brands in the past, Jenn decided to launch her new fashion line, Eggie – a project she’s been working on towards the end of last year.

Eggie_Lookbook14

“‘Eggie’ is ‘baby’ in Korean and growing up, I was always the ‘eggie’ in the family, and now this clothing line is the ‘eggie’ of my own,” she says in her most recent upload. “This is a full-blown 27-piece collection – there’s a lot to go through!” Eggie’s debut offers classic staples as well as some of Jenn’s favourite trends like slip dresses, jumpsuits, bomber jackets, and even a comfy jogger set. Evidently, the lineup is an extension of her existing closet, which is great news for those who wish to cop Jenn’s wardrobe in its entirety.

One thing that makes her clothes stand out is undoubtedly her Korean heritage. You’ll spot a custom print of the Korean national flower on a jumpsuit from the collection, and a Korean melon print on a matching off-the-shoulder top and skirt set.

Eggie’s pieces range from US$25 – US$79, which makes the collection pretty darn affordable actually. We can’t wait to see more seasonal updates added to her new clothing line.

Virgil Abloh and Nike’s “The Ten” Collection Finally Makes Its Debut

The hype over the collaboration between Off-White and Nike is at its peak right now, with all 10 shoes finally unveiled to the fashion community. You bet every hypebeast out there has already marked their calendars and has started stocking up on necessities which they will be needing while they queue for those coveted sneakers, which include the Nike Air Force 1 Low, Nike Air Max 97, and the Converse Chuck Taylor among others.
Divided into two themes, the open-source nature of “The Ten” is a reflection of Nike shoes over the years that were able to stand the test of time, all while defining and representing the sport and sneaker culture at the same time.

The first set under the theme “REVEALING” consists of the Air Jordan I, Nike Air Max 90, Nike Air Presto, Nike Air VaporMax, and Nike Blazer Mid. It centers around the idea of accessible-looking shoes, and features a hand-cut, open-source, and reconstructed design to achieve that aesthetic.

The other set of five shoes belong to a theme dubbed as “GHOSTING”, and as the name suggests, goes for a more futuristic vibe that has a little mysterious aura going on. Constructed with translucent uppers to fuel the idea of “revealing” and combining it with other common materials, classic silhouettes like the Converse Chuck Taylor, Nike Zoom Fly SP, Nike Air Force 1 Low, Nike React Hyperdunk 2017, and Nike Air Max 97, undergo a slight revamp.

Abloh’s signature tongue-in-cheek text placements are also found on this collection, with the word “AIR” positioned on the lateral side of the Nike Air VaporMax, Air Jordan I, and Air Presto, as well as “SHOELACES” written on the shoe strings. While some shoes had their Swoosh placements shifted, and others enlarged, what remains consistent through it all is a unique red zip tie that tagged onto the laces of each model, giving off a do-it-yourself aesthetic, which is exactly what Abloh had in mind.

Speaking of the collection, Abloh says: “Yes, we’re making a desired product, but by making a trip to your local store, and using tools you have at home, you could also make this shoe.”
Very well, if we can’t get our hands on them, we might as well Just Do It with what we can find from our very own mama shops at the void decks.

The first five sneakers of “The Ten” project—the Air Jordan I, Nike Blazer, Nike Air Presto, Nike Air Max 90, and Nike Air VaporMax—will be pre-released in New York City (September 9-13), London (September 18-22), Milan (September 21-25) and Paris (September 26-30) at NikeLab stores.
The full collection including all ten silhouettes will be available in November at NikeLab stores and select retailers worldwide.

The Really Luxurious Hand Creams That You Don't Need, But Definitely Want

Recently, Chanel sent us their newest hand cream, the La Crème Main that’s launching in October. We saw it, and of course we had to Instagram it:

This definitely has very high aesthetic value for a humble hand cream, though it’s Chanel after all, so that probably makes it not-so-humble. As someone pointed out in the comments, yes it looks like an Apple mouse, and we’re already kind of obsessed with it. Chanel promises a formula made of the most exclusive botanicals, like May rose wax and the iris pallida flower from Chanel’s gardens in Grasse, France.
For 50ml, this will set you back $85. A pretty penny to pay for hand cream, but then again, it’s Chanel. The La Crème Main got us contemplating the need for hand cream in our lives, however. Given that we don’t have a dry climate here, it’s definitely not a pressing need for most; and when you put a high premium on a beauty product that’s far from a daily necessity… are you really going to pay for that?
In the case of the La Crème Main, the answer is in the affirmative. Probably just for the sheer novelty of the packaging and the thrill of taking it out of our bags to the impressed gasps of our friends, but it’s worth it. We took the opportunity to seek out other really expensive hand creams, and examine what makes them worth the price.

La Mer The Hand Treatment
$185 for 100ml. Available at La Mer counters.

la mer the hand treatment

Suddenly, Chanel’s $85 hand cream seems affordable next to La Mer, which costs a whole hundred dollars more. Of course, you’re getting twice the amount of product here, but it’s not like there’s a cheaper, smaller-sized tube to go for. It’s either almost $200 for a 100ml tube of La Mer for your hands, or nothing at all. Why is this so pricey? The immediate answer is that it’s La Mer, and this one contains that famed Miracle Broth too. If you can afford to apply youth-preserving algae extract on your hands, it’s a pretty clear sign you’ve made it in life.

Clé de Peau Beauté Hand Cream
$120 for 75ml. Available at the Clé de Peau Beauté store and counters.
cle-de-peau-beaute-hand-cream

Coming in a close second at $120 is Clé de Peau Beauté, and this pastel pink tube contains what is described as “a concentrated, richly emollient cream”. It contains the brand’s Illuminating Complex, in case you need your hands to be as radiant as your face is, and SPF 18 because ain’t no sun spots are going to make their way to your hands. Even the fragrance is extra atas: apparently, it’s created from peony, and a rare orchid.

Tata Harper Rejuvenating Hand Cream
US$56.98 for 50ml. Available on net-a-porter.com.
tata-harper-rejuvenating-hand-cream

The packaging of this one belies the premium price tag, but what you’re paying for is a formula that’s free of synthetics, artificial fragrances, and… gluten. In case your strict gluten-free diet extends to the skin cells on your hands as well. Dry skin gets treated with hyaluronic acid, avocado peptides, and extracts of rose geranium and magnolia flower, which makes for a very nice natural scent.

Rodin Luxury Hand and Body Cream
US$59.61 for 100ml. Available on net-a-porter.com

rodin-crema

Rodin’s a cult beauty brand famous for their facial oils, and this hand and body cream contains essentials oils as well. Which means this smells like a dream thanks to the oils of jasmine and neroli, so each application will transport you into an almost-spa experience. Suddenly, S$80 for hand cream and Net-A-Porter’s shipping fee seems well worth it. This, dear readers, is what luxury feels like.

BYREDO La Tulipe Hand Cream
$50 for 30ml. Available at escentials.
byredo la tulipe hand cream

Like everything else from this Swedish fragrance brand, you’re paying for the branding, and the feeling of whipping this monochrome, intentionally minimalist tube out of your purse, and applying this uniquely-scented cream all over your hands. Or maybe the opportunity to casually slip this into your next Instagram flatlay. No judging, because we’re one of those who gladly hand over almost $200 for a small bottle of Byredo perfume, even though we know we can’t really afford it.

Netflix Knows How to Make Your Lover Watch Your Favourite TV Shows

We’ve all been there before. A damn fine television show pops out of nowhere. Cue multiple binge-watching sessions. And then…bam, you need to share the love, one way or another. Trouble is, when you actually do so, not everybody feels the same as you, and that select group of ill-advised folk includes your significant other.
Ah, the folly. Makes you want to smash your head in frustration.

Well, there’s no need to worry. In fact, there exists a method so deviously simple, that you’ll be scratching your head as to why you’ve never thought of it before. And thanks to Netflix, we know all about it.
Everybody’s favourite television streaming service found in an analysis conducted across 40+ countries between 2015 and 2017 showing that its “recommendations” feature is the best way to coax your lover into enjoying the same shows as you.

Yes, really.
The data showed that more than 80% of all shows watched on Netflix are discovered through “recommendations”, with plenty of viewers unexposed to a certain genre before going on to watch it.
For instance, it was found that one in eight Marvel viewers were new to the superhero genre prior to watching shows like Daredevil and Luke Cage, and that one in five Stranger Things fans were new to the horror genre before exploring it further.
Marvel's Daredevil

Marvel’s Daredevil

Marvel's Luke Cage

Marvel’s Luke Cage

“At Netflix we know genres are just wrappers, which is why we work hard to create algorithms that help members break these pre-conceived notions and make it easier for them to find stories they’ll love, even in seemingly unlikely places,” said Todd Yellin, Vice President of Product for Netflix.
So what does this mean? Can genres be thrown out the window?
Pretty much, if you take Netflix’s findings at face value. Basically, it doesn’t matter if your boyfriend’s man-pride is getting in the way of him watching more female-centric shows like Jessica Jones – it’s a preconceived bias; emphasis on the word bias as other “badass” shows run on similar themes.
Below is a chart that shows exactly just that:
SupershowR4-sg-01

For example, it was found that fans of Making a Murderer and Narcos absolutely loved Jessica Jones. Orange is the New Black and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt fans couldn’t get enough of Daredevil, while Amanda Knox watchers had a thing for Luke Cage.
Marvel's Jessica Jones

Marvel’s Jessica Jones

Orange Is The New Black Season 5
Orange Is The New Black

That proves just one thing: genre is just a way to fit television shows into loose categories, with a fluidity not often noticed by viewers.
Of course, all that is so, so easy to change; even for what was previously thought to be one of the world’s most difficult challenges – getting your lover to watch (and enjoy) the same shows as you. But now, you’ve got the stats to back you up, and well, TV sources don’t get more trustworthy than Netflix.
There’s just one slight downside to this however.
If you manage to successfully convince your partner to watch your favourite TV programmes, there will be a new problem: making sure that you guys watch the same shows at the same time. After all, hell hath no fury as a partner that’s been left one episode behind.
Anyway.
There are plenty of shows available for you to get your binge-watching sessions on, but we recommend going for The Defenders – an action-packed mash-up of all the Marvel shows currently on Netflix, including Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist.
Marvel's The Defenders

Iron Fist in Marvel’s The Defenders

Or you could just go crazy based on your recommendations, which in Netflix’s opinion, is the best way to explore television like never before (and to convince your partner that your favourite show could be theirs too).

Show Some Love to the Inner Corners of Your Eyes With This Easy Strobing Trend

When it comes to makeup, the devil is in the details. A winged-liner with clean lines can make your feline eyes look extra sharp, while a red lip with blurred edges lends an effortless air to a bold colour that often requires precision – just take notes from French It-girl Jeanne Damas. Well, the latest Instagram beauty trend to prove this point is one that’s been around for aeons, apparently. It’s none other than inner eye strobing.

Pink&sparks. Not every #colormakeup should be complicated. Not every skin makeup should be glowing and shining. Not every face needs to be contoured. And not every makeup should satisfy everyone's tastes. My #makeup using all @manlyprocosmetics ———————————– Искры и цвет. Не всякий цветной мэйкап должен быть сложным. Highlighter is an essential for when you wanna glow up, which is why we’ll often dab and blend them onto the high points of our face. But we really gotta agree with Refinery29 on this – use a highlighter on the inner corners of your eyes is the easiest way to add a tinge of cool to your everyday makeup routine. All you need to do is grab a highlighter or an iridescent eyeshadow shade and blend away at the corners. You may be emphasising that tiny area of your face, but it sure makes a huge statement, especially if you opt for an eye-popping colour.

You might not notice right away, but the trick doesn’t just draw attention to your eyes, it brightens them and makes them appear more awake, too. And hey, it looks awesome paired with the upside-down eye makeup trend. The clever fashion-forward technique is one that’s been favoured by plenty of makeup artists in the business for a long time now, but it wasn’t until recently that the trend gained a little more traction, and now beauty enthusiasts have collectively fallen in love with it. We’re definitely taken with this genius tip as well, since we can finally put those neglected shades in the eyeshadow palette to good use.

As part of the brand’s 2017 holiday collection (yes, it’s never too early to get into the Christmas spirit), the latest iteration of the palette will include seven blush shades and a highlighter to finish.
The cruelty-free cosmetics line shared with PopSugar an exclusive first look of the new palette, and we can already feel the heat from all the warm tones housed in the palette.

According to Popsugar, the colours in the palette include Heated (hot coral), Lavish (coral), Poused (pink), Mindful (nude pink), Peachy (peach), Rad (hot pink), Kindred (cool nude), and Spirited (champagne highlighter) – colours that will help you complete that Copper Rose makeup look that is currently trending right now on Instagram.

How much are one of those Amazonian clay blushes, again? Right…$45. Yeap, so basically you’re getting a really good deal and doing yourself a huge favour by getting these limited edition shades for way much less. Tarte has got to be our secret santa this year.

This Liquid Lipstick Goes From Matte to Glittery In the Blink of an Eye

Ever since its introduction to the beauty industry, the liquid lipstick has gone on to become a perennial favourite and a staple you can find in many makeup bags. It comes in every formula and finish imaginable, which makes it so tough to pick out one for the day. Fickle friends, fear not. This is exactly why Ciaté London’s latest launch is one that’ll entice you.

Seems like the brand couldn’t decide between finishes when they were creating their new liquid lipsticks either, which is why they crafted an innovative formula that goes from matte to metallic to glitter just by smacking your lips together a couple times. Seriously, all you have to do is swipe an even layer of Ciaté London’s Glitter Flip Liquid Lipstick onto your lips and let it dry completely for about a minute. Then, press your lips together watch those matte pigments transform into glitter like magic.

There are 7 gorgeous shades in the lineup: Candy, a mauve-y pink; Iconic, a purple-tinged blue; Siren, a bright turquoise; Infamous, a rose-gold; Hollywood, a vivid pink-red; and Forbidden, a deep fuchsia. As you’d expect, the nude shades give off a subtler shimmer, whereas the deeper, bolder shades reveal a more eye-catching glimmer. One thing’s for sure, though – you’ll stand out no matter which shade you decide to wear out.

The Fragrances That Smell Like Desserts

Sweet fragrances can be quite divisive. There are those who always gravitate towards them, and the ones who give them a very, very wide berth. We’re aware notes like vanilla and berries are not things everyone wants to smell like, but these recent perfume launches make quite a compelling case for smelling sweet. Sometimes, smelling like dessert isn’t all that bad…

YSL Beauty Mon Paris Eau de Toilette
$99 for 30ml; $199 for 90ml. Available at YSL Beauty stores and counters from September.

ysl-mon-paris-edt

The original YSL Mon Paris Eau de Parfum is one of our favourites, for being a fruity-floral that’s nice and sweet without being too overly cloying, universally appealing enough that random strangers would tell us that we smelt nice whenever we spritzed this on (true story). So what’s new with the Eau de Toilette version? There’s blackberry among the top notes now in place of pear and strawberry, and while the middle notes still feature the datura flower, the floral heart of the scent is now described as “more delicate and crystalline”. Being an eau de toilette, the top notes are going to be more obvious – so the fruity character comes through stronger in this edition. Random strangers will probably tell you you smell nice in this too.

Burberry My Burberry Blush Eau de Parfum
$105 for 30ml; $148 for 50ml; $215 for 90ml. Available at Burberry counters.
my-burberry-blush

As with most other Burberry scents, the My Burberry Blush comes inspired by an English garden; and in this case, a garden ripe with pomegranate, lemons and apples. While the original My Burberry is a floral perfume, this latest edition is clearly a fruity one with pomegranate and lemon at the top, apple and rose petal in the middle, drying down into a light floral base of jasmine and wisteria accord.

Kenzo World Eau de Parfum
$96 for 30ml, $133 for 50ml, and $164 for 75ml. Available at all Sephora stores and Sephora.sg from 31 August.

kenzo-world

The bottle design and out-of-this-world video ad were enough to have us sold on the Kenzo World without even caring about what it smells like. But contrary to the very daring external appearance, on the inside, this fragrance is unexpectedly girly and… sweet. This sweetness comes from the peony and Egyptian jasmine, with a certain edginess courtesy of Ambroxan® crystals.

Prada Candy Gloss Eau de Toilette
$148 for 50ml, and $192 for 80ml. Available at major department stores and selected Sephora stores.
prada-candy-gloss

The Prada Candy fragrance family has always been one rooted in ingredients that probably can be found in your favourite dessert as well, such as vanilla and caramel. This fifth edition is a bit of a zestier take, putting cherry and orange blossom notes in focus; but of course, it dries down into the familiar musky vanilla, accompanied by almond.

Valentino Valentina Blush Eau de Parfum
$145 for 50ml and $185 for 80ml. Available at major department stores and selected Sephora stores.
valentina-blush

This bottle instantly had our hearts – but the mix of orange blossom and praline, like a particularly zesty dessert, makes this fragrance quite delectable indeed. Other notes include sour cherry and pink pepper, to balance out the sweetness. Contrary to the bottle design, no roses in here, though.

Pat McGrath Is Finally Releasing A Permanent Makeup Collection

After many rounds of sold-out limited edition collections, Pat McGrath is finally releasing a permanent makeup collection, aptly named the “Unlimited Edition”. This has got to be every makeup junkie’s dream come true. If you didn’t manage to get your hands on McGrath’s previous LUST: Matte Trance lipsticks, this upcoming collection will fill the hole in your heart with its extensive 61-piece makeup selection that includes lipsticks, lip pencils, eyeliners, mascara as well as eyeshadow palettes.
First up, the “Mothership” palettes which are available in three different themes – the Subliminal Eye Palette, Sublime Eye Palette, and Subversive Eye Palette, range from neutral browns, to warm pinkish hues, and of course not forgetting bold shimmery metallics. Each palette consists of 10 powder eyeshadows with a good mix of matte and glittery finishes. You will also find some hues familiar as they will be taken from previous releases, such as Gold 002 and Dark Star. Coming in the eye department as well are the PermaGel Ultra Glide Eye pencils which will be available in five different shades.

Moving on to the lips, the collection will also include 12 PermaGel Ultra Lip Pencils and 31 Luxe Trance lipsticks. The lipsticks are newly formulated to come off creamy and highly pigmented and will also feature nine existing shades from the Matte Trance lipstick collection. Fans will also be happy to know that the bullets will be housed in the same luxurious-looking black and gold tube with a gold lip motif used in the Matte Trance collection.

The artistry does not just end with the makeup. According to Fashionista, the boxes that stores the products are designed by creative talents found on social media, in her bid to “further deepen her commitment to serve as an incubator for new creative talent in fields beyond makeup artistry.” How can one not love this woman?
pat mc grath 3
As usual, this collection didn’t just pop out of the blue. Like the Matte Trance lipsticks, this ultimate collection has been years in the making, created based on her knowledge and experience she acquired throughout her illustrious 25 years of working in the beauty industry, so you know what you’re getting is definitely the real deal.
Ranging from US$25 – US$125, the Pat McGrath Labs Unlimited Edition launches on 16 September 2017, 12am EST (same day 12pm SGT), on patmcgrath.com. It will also be available on Sephora.us on 4 October 2017.

Where You Can Get Those Super Bouncy Castella Cakes

In the world of food fads, it’s high time we get jiggly with this latest one — especially when we’re talking about these particularly fluffy sponge cakes. Yeah, you’d think sponge cakes aren’t the most exciting things to talk about right, but you’ll be surprised; after all, it’s the castella here, the ones that look like this:

Oh!! Uh huh. Skip to 0:26 if you just want to watch the wobbly motion. As for why they’re popular, there’s definitely that element of drama there. At most stores, the cake comes out from the oven freshly baked, and is then placed on the counter to be served — and admired. There’s the anticipation of removing the baking paper, then tossing the tray high up in order to flip the humungous block over. With a long ruler (yeah, drama), that’s then sliced open to reveal its soft centre, but not without a mesmerising wiggle or two.
These castella cakes are definitely the source of that snaking queue at your neighbourhood mall, or a nasty comment by an outraged customer on Facebook, either way, it’s obvious that actually getting your hands on this piece of sponge cake is no piece of cake, thanks to its popularity over the recent months.
While the original recipe was devised in Spain, it was the Japanese who made it all the rage, using just eggs, bread flour, sugar and honey for their far more bouncy renditions. As for the ones in Singapore now, it seems we’re being introduced to the Taiwanese versions of the castalla cakes, usually served hot, and with the addition of well-loved cheese. ’nuff said, we’ll cut to the fad.

Le Castella

17807219_1922738947961370_8222267705707432227_o

Straight from Taiwan, they’re the ones credited for starting the craze in Singapore — we heard there was a 4 hour queue back in May! To be honest, we only discovered Le Castella one fine day while walking around the basement of Tampines 1, and wondering why people were huddling about the nondescript store front with just wooden panels at the back, a prominent Chinese character for a name, stacks of brown boxes and one black counter top. Strange huh, so we stuck around. And then we saw it, those wobbly cakes being carried out to the kitchen, awaiting to be sliced, making the whole “cutting ceremony” a sales pitch right there.

Each generous slab of the original cake ($9.90) is moist and light, kinda like the Steamed Egg Cake that we’re used to at dim sum restaurants. As for the Cheese Castella ($11.90) it contains two layers of oozy cheese within, which adds a nice savoury twist to the otherwise sweet eggy flavour of the cake. At the moment, you might have to wait two hours for your cake, though the store has since implemented time slots for you to pick up your item.
Location: Tampines 1, #B1-32
Opening Hours: 11am – 10pm

Ah Mah Homemade Cake
Castella Original 1

Originally from Malaysia, the brand quickly expanded across its home country due to the rising popularity of its castella cakes, which led to an explosion of 14 outlets across the country — of course, this just means that they need to come over to our shores too, so Singaporeans can get a taste of the cakes for ourselves. The cakes from Ah Mah Homemade Cake are freshly made daily and inspired by the popular egg sponge varieties from Taiwan, hence the baking time of 80 minutes and a recipe of purely milk, eggs and quality flour without added water, preservatives or colouring. That also means that they’re pretty healthy, so you won’t feel too sinful the next time you’re munching on this snack.
Castella Cheese Cake1

You can choose from the Original ($8) or Cheese ($11) flavours — to date, over 18,000 of the delicious moist cakes have been sold in Singapore alone. Since arriving here, they’ve had outlets at Bukit Panjang Plaza, VivoCity, and a recent third outlet at JCube, while they’re also looking to conquer the East with one at Paya Lebar Square (24 August), as well as Plaza Singapura and Bedok in September.
Location: Bukit Panjang Plaza, #01-08; VivoCity, #B2-K7; JCube, #B2-K12
Opening Hours: 10am – 10pm
Antoinette
mood shot

Consider this the more elegant version of the castella cake — after all, they’re called The Queen’s Castella Cakes, conceived by Chef Pang Kok Keong of Antoinette, and come in six exquisite flavours. We have the now-classic Vanilla ($8) and Vanilla Cheese ($11, with a cheddar and parmesan cheese glaze), but also Earl Grey ($12), Earl Grey Cheese ($15), Nutella ($13) and the local twist of Ondeh Ondeh ($11), or pandan-infused cake studded with gula melaka bits and hints of coconut. We’re certainly glad to see some originality here.
Earl Grey Cheese Nutella

While the Taiwanese-inspired versions of castella cakes tend to be more pillowy, those from Parisian-style bakery Antoinette are of a denser texture, though still as fluffy — this requires a method that does without baking powder, and instead having the cakes lift purely by meringue and a slow-bake method for that light, melt-in-your-mouth feel.
Location: 30 Penhas Road; Mandarin Gallery, #02-33/34
Opening Hours: 11am – 10pm
BreadTalk
Pong-Pong_etch-670x455

You know something’s a trend when BreadTalk has their own version of it, but hey, it looks like they’re doing a good job of replicating the soft texture of the sponge cake, judging from their social media postings. Of course, they’ve changed up the name as well, to a cute-sounding Pong Pong Cake ($8.80), and mixed it up with another Singaporean food craze: salted egg yolk. Hence, yes, the queues. The salted egg yolk filling sits between the layers of sponge that’s touted to be like the old-school versions, and though we heard that sponge isn’t as airy as their competitors, but you know, who in their right minds can resist anything salted egg yolk?! Certainly not us.
Location: Selected BreadTalk outlets at Causeway Point, Chinatown Point, Novena Square, Paragon, Toa Payoh HDB Hub, Vivocity and Westgate

See A Little Bit Of Singapore In Tokyo This Weekend

A bit of our little red dot is going to be transplanted into the city of Tokyo this weekend, in the form of this year’s edition of the Singapore: Inside Out exhibition, organised by the Singapore Tourism Board.
Previous editions of this travelling exhibition have been held in Beijing, London and New York since 2015, and this year the chosen destinations are Tokyo and in November, Sydney. The whole idea of Singapore: Inside Out is to bring the Singapore creative identity to the rest of the world, in the form of showcases that are also carefully curated with the host city’s audience in mind.
We’re especially excited about this month’s Tokyo edition because it stars one of our own: Josiah Chua, NYLON Singapore‘s Contributing Senior Fashion Stylist, will be exhibiting his fashion creations!

Profile-Josiah-Chua

Jo’s had strong ties to the land of the rising sun for some time now: besides having studied and worked there, his fashion designs often bear strong fantasy themes, with obvious anime influences. His eponymous label is stocked in Tokyo, and a one-of-a-kind creation was ever picked up by the Mother Monster herself, Lady Gaga.
For Singapore: Inside Out, he’ll be presenting a first look into his 2018 capsule collection, titled “光”, which is “light” in Chinese. The collection comes inspired by Sailor Moon, also Jo’s favourite anime series, and this manifests in the form of holographic materials, plenty of iridescence, and strong, graphic shapes on floaty dresses.

sg-inside-out-1 sg-inside-out-2

Think the magical sequence when the regular schoolgirls transform into their magical soldier alter-egos, with the bursts of iridescent light that never failed to capture our imaginations as children glued to the TV screens every weekend morning. For this exhibition, Josiah will be working with Media Art Nexus, an art collective based in the Nanyang Technological University, to create an interactive projection of dazzling stars and light that moves with the viewer, all to evoke that specific magic of Sailor Moon’s transformation.

Other creatives that will be part of Singapore: Inside Out in Tokyo include sound artist Zul Mahmod, local gallery shop Supermama, KITCHEN. LABEL, a Singapore and Tokyo-based record label. There will also be partner events running in tandem with the exhibition, such as a collaboration between Tokyo’s Dominique Ansel bakery and Singaporean chef Malcolm Lee of Candlenut, to create a Peranakan-inspired dessert stocked at Dominique Ansel’s Omotesando bakery.
Hear more from the participants of this year’s exhibition in this video:

The Tokyo edition of Singapore: Inside Out will be held from 25 to 27 August 2017, at the BANK Gallery, Tokyo, Shibuya-ku, Jingumae 6-14-5. Admission is free. More information on visitsingapore.com.

Urban Decay’s Upcoming Mascara is Sex-proof

Isn’t it weird that beauty brands are referencing sex in their product promotions, specifically mascaras and nothing else? Take Too Faced’s cult-favourite Better Than Sex Mascara, and now Urban Decay’s Troublemaker Mascara that claims to be sex-proof.

Last month, Urban Decay’s founder, Wendy Zomnir, took to social media to tease followers of the brand’s upcoming mascara launch, and just looking at its packaging, we knew trouble was brewing. How can anyone not get lured into buying the mascara when it is housed in an iridescent holographic tube? But it seems like the bottle is not the only reason to get all hyped up about. The mascara seems to do wonders to the lashes as well. If you shift your attention to Zomnir’s eyes in the teaser photo, you’ll see her lashes are looking full and voluminous even at the beach! How tho?!

The Troublemaker mascara is made of a failsafe formula that is infused with hollow silica and ultralight fibers that will volumize (13.7 times the lash volume to be exact) without forming clumps or weighing down your lashes, while the Vitamin E and Panthenol will nourish and condition those killer lashes.
In addition, you can rest assure that every single strand of lashes will be coated with their badass custom brush that comes with the mascara. Made with tiny precision hooks, the brush combs and separate lashes for an instant lash-multiplying effect.
image011

In an Instagram post, the mascara is also described as super-fat, super-long, and sex-proof, which we’re guessing it means that it’s smudge-proof and sweat-proof so you know the mascara is here to stay even when you find yourself in a steaming hot mess, y’know what we mean?

We weren't looking for trouble…it found us. 😉#HereComesTrouble #UrbanDecay

Get yourself in trouble come October 26th, where the Troublemaker mascara is set to launch in Singapore, with the Troublemaker Mascara retailing islandwide at $38, while the travel sized tube will be made available exclusively at Sephora for $18. Or double the trouble with Urban Decay’s limited edition Troublemaker Mascara and Eyeliner Set which will also be available islandwide for $45.

Asia’s Most Exciting Photography Contest Returns with More Insta-Worthy Moments

“Look
If you had
One shot
Or one opportunity
To seize everything you ever wanted
In one moment
Would you capture
Or just let it slip?”
Before you start breaking out into the whole “his palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy” jam, just combine Eminem’s words with the image of 20 camera-equipped individuals competing for the title of Asia’s ultimate amateur photographer. The description fits, yeah?

Well, at least that’s what’s going to go down when season 4 of Photo Face-Off premieres on 24 August on the HISTORY Channel.
Print

Presented by Canon Photo Marathon and hosted by Kelly Latimer, Asia’s number one photography showdown will once again feature pro photographer Justin Mott, with 5 exciting, action-packed one-hour episodes spread out across 5 countries.
Four local contestants from each country – namely, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, and the Philippines – will compete against one another for a chance to land the solitary spot at the competition’s Grand Finale episode in Chiang Rai, Thailand.
It ain’t going to be easy getting there though.
Besides the pressure of Justin Mott popping up with his pro skills, each challenge will push all the contestants to their limits, with qualities such as technical skill, knowledge, and creativity put under the spotlight.

For instance, in the first episode based in Singapore, contestants must showcase their very best sharpshooter skills as they attempt to snap rock climbers in action, all the while climbing the walls themselves.
The next episode in Melaka, Malaysia, sees each contestant ferrying around a bowl of freshly made cendol to find a backdrop for an insta-worthy foodie shot. The problem is that the sun will be freaking hot, and once the ice melts, time is up.
Seriously, talk about difficult.
Here’s one example of a “face-off” challenge from Season 2:

These are just some of the crazy challenges that contestants will have to face before becoming Asia’s ultimate amateur photographer.
Before that though, a winner from a wild card round featuring hopefuls from Thailand, Hong Kong, and Taiwan will join the five country champions in Chiang Rai for a showdown of epic proportions, something you really don’t want to miss, especially if you love looking at beautiful pictures.
So who will become champion? Will our local reps make Singapore proud again like how university student Shaun Tan did back in 2015? Or could another country steal the limelight? We guess the only way to find out is to tune in when Photo Face-Off premieres later this 24 August at 9pm on the HISTORY Channel (StarHub TV Ch 401).
Till then, you can check out Justin Mott’s full Instagram page here to see how tough it’s going to be for the contestants when they go up against him.
