Fri, 21 Oct 2016: “Who doesn’t know Scorpions?” was my question all week long, leading up to Friday’s show. It’s been 15 years since the German rock band last performed in Singapore, and as part of their 50th anniversary world tour, Singapore was fortunate to be one of the few stops in Asia courtesy of LAMC productions.
Longtime members Klaus Meine (vocals), Rudolf Schenker (guitar), Matthias Jabs (guitar), Mikkey Dee (drums) and Paweł Mąciwoda (bass) started the night with an impressive stage set-up complete with holograms, a fancy light display, and an elevated platform for the drums. Throughout the set, it’s evident that the Scorpions are still in top form. Lead singer Klaus Meine, at 68 years of age, continues to impress with his unique tenor voice in ballads like “Send Me an Angel”. Drummer Mikkey Dee, while dripping in sweat and whipping hair off his face pulled off a spectacular drum solo; and guitarist Rudolf Schenker showed off his buff physique that suggests he built his house not on a rock, but in a gym. And you know the band is having a good time when they play to the crowd; for those who arrived early enough to park themselves at the front of the stage, they were thrown guitar picks and drumsticks (ow!) as invaluable souvenirs. The band also gathered in a row several times for the perfect photo op for anyone directly facing the centre of the stage. The night was a clear celebration not just for the band, but for the fans who were out in full force, packing the Suntec Convention Centre to capacity.
