The Fragrances That Smell Like Desserts

Sweet fragrances can be quite divisive. There are those who always gravitate towards them, and the ones who give them a very, very wide berth. We’re aware notes like vanilla and berries are not things everyone wants to smell like, but these recent perfume launches make quite a compelling case for smelling sweet. Sometimes, smelling like dessert isn’t all that bad…

YSL Beauty Mon Paris Eau de Toilette
$99 for 30ml; $199 for 90ml. Available at YSL Beauty stores and counters from September.

The original YSL Mon Paris Eau de Parfum is one of our favourites, for being a fruity-floral that’s nice and sweet without being too overly cloying, universally appealing enough that random strangers would tell us that we smelt nice whenever we spritzed this on (true story). So what’s new with the Eau de Toilette version? There’s blackberry among the top notes now in place of pear and strawberry, and while the middle notes still feature the datura flower, the floral heart of the scent is now described as “more delicate and crystalline”. Being an eau de toilette, the top notes are going to be more obvious – so the fruity character comes through stronger in this edition. Random strangers will probably tell you you smell nice in this too.

Burberry My Burberry Blush Eau de Parfum
$105 for 30ml; $148 for 50ml; $215 for 90ml. Available at Burberry counters.

As with most other Burberry scents, the My Burberry Blush comes inspired by an English garden; and in this case, a garden ripe with pomegranate, lemons and apples. While the original My Burberry is a floral perfume, this latest edition is clearly a fruity one with pomegranate and lemon at the top, apple and rose petal in the middle, drying down into a light floral base of jasmine and wisteria accord.

Kenzo World Eau de Parfum
$96 for 30ml, $133 for 50ml, and $164 for 75ml. Available at all Sephora stores and Sephora.sg from 31 August.

The bottle design and out-of-this-world video ad were enough to have us sold on the Kenzo World without even caring about what it smells like. But contrary to the very daring external appearance, on the inside, this fragrance is unexpectedly girly and… sweet. This sweetness comes from the peony and Egyptian jasmine, with a certain edginess courtesy of Ambroxan® crystals.

Prada Candy Gloss Eau de Toilette
$148 for 50ml, and $192 for 80ml. Available at major department stores and selected Sephora stores.

The Prada Candy fragrance family has always been one rooted in ingredients that probably can be found in your favourite dessert as well, such as vanilla and caramel. This fifth edition is a bit of a zestier take, putting cherry and orange blossom notes in focus; but of course, it dries down into the familiar musky vanilla, accompanied by almond.

Valentino Valentina Blush Eau de Parfum
$145 for 50ml and $185 for 80ml. Available at major department stores and selected Sephora stores.

This bottle instantly had our hearts – but the mix of orange blossom and praline, like a particularly zesty dessert, makes this fragrance quite delectable indeed. Other notes include sour cherry and pink pepper, to balance out the sweetness. Contrary to the bottle design, no roses in here, though.
