Everyone knows that Orchard Road is a shopping paradise but let’s face it, we probably have gotten bored of what we fondly call ‘town’. There isn’t much diversity nowadays… I mean, you can easily find certain brands in more than one shopping mall along Orchard Road, no? Now, things certainly got a lot more interesting when you’ve got a whopping 61 local brands together, all in one space — which takes #supportlocal to a whole new level. That’s where Design Orchard comes in.
Lead by Enterprise Singapore, JTC and Singapore Tourism Board, Design Orchard is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to transform Orchard Road into a lifestyle destination.
Located at the junction of Orchard Road and Cairnhill Road, the two-and-a-half storey development designed by WOHA Architects is definitely not inferior to the shopping malls nearby. There is a retail showcase, operated by Naiise, on the first level. This level may have used a minimalist material palette consisting of only concrete, but it serves as a canvas that lets each retailer’s display to shine. You can even take a peek into the retail showcase through the circular openings!
On the roof top, there are incubation spaces and an events area. Head upstairs to admire the building’s sloping rooftop, along with pebble-shaped benches, umbrellas and a synthetic turf carpet, which offer the public respite from the bustle of Orchard Road (and a new spot for your Instagram posts).
Not only will Design Orchard showcase the best of Singapore’s talent, it will also add diversity to the Orchard streetscape. With so many local brands all under one roof, you can expect to shop till you drop. Look forward to a whole range of items from various categories such as fashion apparel, beauty and wellness, food souvenirs and small home furnishings.
