Experience Edgy and Raw Creativity at the Aliwal Urban Art Festival 2020

Come 18 January 2020, Kampong Glam is set to ignite with waves of unconventional creativity as artists from the periphery gather to challenge perceptions on subculture at the seventh edition of the Aliwal Urban Art Festival!

In this radical showcase of visual art, alternative music, dance performances, and skateboarding, you will be challenged to confront your own perception with the question, “What if?” — What if everything you thought about subculture was wrong? What if street art is beyond the streets? What if urban art takes over?

Here’s what you can expect at the upcoming festival that is set to be a whole lot edgier and raw than ever before!

DANCE

SMILE by ScRach MarcS

This 45-minute free interactive and roving experience combines the experience of a flash mob together with other forms of dance to represent the whimsical world of ScRach MarcS that is guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Unlike other dance acts, SMILE is a pop-up performance with varying timings so you should definitely keep a look-out for it!

What If… Smells Could Come Alive? by ScRach MarcS
Multi-purpose Hall | 4pm to 6pm (45 to 60-minutes)

If you have ever been curious about the ability to see smell, you wouldn’t want to miss this free four-part dance installation. Here, you can watch the unique story of each smell unfold before your eyes as the dancers translate scents into sense with their bodies in inventive and unpredictable movements.

What If… Flowt is Back? by Flowt Collective
Multi-purpose Hall | 6.30pm to 7.30pm (45-minute production)

A contemporary and theatrical dance production brings five unique Singaporean dancers together to combine their vastly different dance styles into an innovative hybrid presentation that explores the idea of staying afloat amidst society’s noise.

What if… We Had A Party Right Now? by ScRach MarcS

Who doesn’t love a good party? End your night on a sweet note at the Party in Progress where you can enjoy different aspects and displays of street culture through fun experiences such as dance battles, cyphers and more! Did we mention that entry is free?

URBAN ART

Live Graffiti Painting & Installation by RSCLS

Try your hand at spray-painting alongside the OGs of Singapore street art! As a core member of Aliwal Arts Centre’s community of tenants, street art veterans RSCLS invites you to join them in their element at this outdoor live painting session!

Get to know urban art a little bit better through a free exhibition curated by RSCLS, who has been a leader of the urban art segment for the festival since the very beginning. Step inside to explore three segmented sections — street, graffiti, and mural art — which will leave you with newfound knowledge on the finer points of urban art in Kampong Glam.

Embark on an alternative walking tour full of murals and street art that have since come to characterise Kampong Glam. Let RSCLS walk you through stories that depict the history and relationship of this vibrant neighbourhood and its subcultural enclave.

Combining musical talents from Singapore and around the region, Urban Sounds aims to bring a whole new level of energy to the Aliwal Urban Art Festival with the ebb of hip-hop, and the flow of R&B.

Fresh off his single drop, let Tengyboy’s smooth beats get you bouncing while you enjoy BigDBangla’s signature cultural flair as part of the line-up. You’ll also not want to miss Singaporean YouTube sensation Preetipls drop her honest truth bombs to the beat.

You could also go on a musical journey with talents from around the region like Thailand’s Pyra who will entrance you with her svelte voice that blends right into the mood of her jazz-inspired R&B; and newbies Mediocre Haircut Crew (MHC) who are set to bring you their self-styled Minature Houseparty Configuration.

Pick up tips on how to customise your very own tote at this repurposing workshop brought to you by the collaborative efforts of KEEN and local designer, FIN Crafted Goods.

Instead of throwing out your old, worn-out or damaged materials, you are encouraged to upcycle it by sewing them onto your FIN tote bags with a little creativity to create a one-of-a-kind piece for your daily use!

URBAN SPORT

Get ready for an invasion of skateboarders as they turn Kampong Glam into a massive outdoor skate battle arena! If you are a skateboarder with skills to boot, you can sign up to shred your stuff at the Skate Run Contest, Best Trick contest, and Tricks 4 Cash.

Alternatively, you could also enjoy Singapore’s best skate talents tear up the arena with their tricks at the Street Jam showcase!

Skate-Mini Clinic and Free Tryouts by SkateSG and Vans
