For those unfamiliar with the term, the vulva is best described as the external opening of the vagina, whereas the labia consists of the inner and outer folds of the vulva. Many tend to dismiss taking care of this area because it’s well-covered throughout the day, but little do they know, that ignorance may lead to more consequences on the physical structure, vaginal health and sexual well-being of an individual.

Though there are many products or procedures to help improve the health of your vagina, there are also some good habits you can cultivate to take care of your vagina and vulva. So if you’re wondering how you can maintain your little flower in the pink of health, read on.

1. Say no to douching

It’s a known fact that vaginas are a self-cleaning organ. With that being said, douching is completely unnecessary as it may cause more harm than good. At times you may find that you experience discharge in your underwear, however, this is just a normal bodily function that does not require to be cleaned out of the vagina. So if you’re thinking of flushing your labia with fluids of all sorts that you’ve found online, you might want to think twice. Doing so might throw off the pH balance of your vagina and may lead to unwanted infections.

2. Washing your labia

Though you don’t have to douche your vagina, it is imperative for you to make it a habit to cleanse your vulva, which also includes your labia. This is because bacteria can build up in these areas which makes you more susceptible to bacterial infections. Hence, be sure to clean the area regularly by washing it with your hands and some mild soap.

3. Wear non-restrictive clothing

If you’ve been living in your yoga tights, you might switch them out for something a little comfortable for the sake of your vagina. By exposing your vagina and vulva to air, it can greatly reduce irritation and discomfort. Try wearing loose clothing that helps air circulation and avoid wearing restrictive  pieces that cling tightly to your skin.

4. Cotton underwear is your best friend

Speaking of non-restrictive clothing, wearing cotton undies should be your go-to for something that’s comfortable and breathable for your crotch. This is because when the vulva or vagina does not get any air, it might make your more prone to yeast infections as yeast thrives in warm and moist places.

5. Change out of your workout clothes

That workout might have drained you out, but it’s important for you to switch out of your workout clothes as soon as you can after a sweaty sesh. Reason being: damp sweaty garments might encourage more moisture to stick which in turn will cause issues to your vaginal health.

6. Going commando to bed

Many of times we find it hilarious when someone mentions about going commando, but truth be told, it might actually do some good for your vagina. Before going to bed, try going commando and skip wearing your underwear to sleep to alleviate excessive sweating and promote air circulation.
