Dyson Purifier Big+Quiet Formaldehyde effectively cleans the air in large spaces, and is surprisingly quiet

When I first saw the Dyson Purifier Big+Quiet Formaldehyde, I was taken aback by its size; at a height of 83cm, and a width of approximately 43cm, this machine takes up a fair amount of floor space. It’s not particularly light either; it weighs close to 12kg, but apart from lifting it out of its huge box, it rolls around on thoughtful built-in wheels so it’s easy to move around. So with a new gadget of this size, it’s not just the cost of it that one must consider, but also the space it will take up in the home.

I do like that even while it’s big, the new purifier manages to look sleek with a futuristic cone and matte finish (the Satin Dark Blue/Gold looks particularly premium as well. There’s also a Bright Nickel/Prussian Blue version that you can check out on Dyson’s official website).

This is a plug-and-play device straight out of the box; all the filters are pre-installed, and once the machine is powered on, the purification (and air analysis) begins immediately.

As its product name implies, it detects formaldehyde (a gas emitted by many household appliances and furniture that can cause irritation of the skin, eyes, nose, and throat) in the air, and destroys it permanently. The purifier also captures allergens and 99.95% of ultra fine particles — all this data is reported and displayed on the machine’s LCD screen and in the MyDyson app if you sync it from your smartphone (you should). While the air gets sucked into the machine and purified, clean air is projected back into the room, and can reach over 10 metres, which is a really large area — hence this purifier works well for bigger rooms.

Above: there are three phases of purification, including a — HEPA H13 grade long-life filter (this is 3.8 times larger than its predecessor)
— a new k carbon filter (to capture gases)
— and a selective catalytic oxidisation filter (this traps formaldehyde and destroys it).

Ultimately, you’ll get a room with less dust, allergens, and unwanted gases, and one that’s also better smelling. It’s a good investment to have on standby when the haze returns, or if you have family members that suffer from dust, pollen or pet allergies.

The Dyson Purifier Big+Quiet Formaldehyde is priced from $1,299 and available at DYSON.COM.SG.
