How We’re Taking On The Denim-On-Denim Trend This Season

Can anyone forget that iconic moment when Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake, then one of the hottest celebrity couples on earth, turned up on the red carpet with matchy head-to-toe denim outfits? We can’t either — it seems that image will forever be ingrained in our heads as part of the cheesy spectacle of the early 2000s,  except if we know anything about fashion, it’s this: what goes around… comes around (also, incidentally, a JT song).

Fast forward to 2019 and we’ll call it — denim-on-denim is back, and hey, never really out of style. And if you’re looking for a sartorial moment to rival that, we’d recommend something less in-your-face but just as cool. Something like Onitsuka Tiger, the reputable Japanese brand that’s all about bold fashion choices, presented in the most effortless way possible. With the help of both apparel and shoes from the brand’s latest SS19 collection, here’s a lookbook and some tips on how you can make denim-on-denim great, again.

Look 1: Feelin’ The Blues

Munah Bagharib (@munahbagharib)

If you think denim-on-denim’s a difficult look to pull off, then we’d suggest a quick glance at Munah’s #OOTD over here — or not, because you might get immediate envy from how good she looks in head-to-toe denim! The YouTube star-turned-actress and host turns up the charm every time she’s in the room (you need to meet her IRL to witness this!), and this time, it’s no different.

With a look this edgy, her face is all business though as she serves us some serious attitude. How does one do all-denim then? With confidence!  And stellar coordination. Pick similar tones for your top/jacket and jeans — the overall effect looks cohesive and more refined for sure, but a little more raw thanks to the dip-dyed wash of these denim garments. Your quintessential pop of colour can then be reserved for these quirky ADMIX Runner kicks.

Denim pant, $169

Look 2: All About That Base(ball)

Hayden Chan (@hyydnn)

As a photographer with plenty of fashion shoots and street-style lookbooks to his name, you bet Hayden knows a thing or two about what stands out. Here, the creative is sporting a bomber jacket that’s in the same blue as the rest of his wear, a piece that’s equal parts eye-catching and a subdued take on the monochromatic look.

You seriously can’t miss the baseball reference in this striped number either, complete with those contrast stripes, oversized wear, and that massive logo at the back that’s indicative of whatever sports team you’re a part of — in this case, we’re Team Onitsuka! Paired with an indigo wash denim, and a pair of OK Basketball high-tops in denim, we think this look’s a definite home run.

Look 3: In Shorts Supply

Mandi Cheung (@mandithezebra)

There’s never an off-duty look we don’t like, but Mandi manages to make this one more covetable than most. When she’s not up in the air as a flight attendant, the Miss Singapore Universe finalist shows us how to rock a down-to-earth look that comprises of a striped long-sleeved shirt and denim shorts. And as with everything she does, she makes these simple picks a tad cooler too.

Here, we’d say that accessories maketh the man woman. For a more palatable version of denim-on-denim, try layering on denim accessories instead! In this case, a denim rain hat really makes all the difference — that, and a pair of OK Basketball high-tops in clean white.

On Mandi:
Denim rain hat, $109
WS shirt, $189
WS denim short, $139

Look 4: Dressed To The Nines

Novita Lam (@novitalam)

Except we’d say that this one’s a 10/10! One look at Novita’s Instagram feed and you’ll see that the fashion and beauty influencer is always up for a flowy dress or two — and why not, she carries it off with such girlish charm. Then again, this denim look works on her too, thanks to how it looks utterly effortless.

And it truly is! We confess to opting for dresses on our lazy outfit days, and this denim dress certainly fits the bill — it makes you look coordinated and put-together, while being very easy to slip on. The details of the contrast stitching, oversized pockets, and drawstring at the waist gives the look a casual grace too, and if you’re all for a more fashionable twist, a pair of high socks gives you plenty of low-key attitude. Subtle.

On Novita:
Middle Socks, $25
