In celebration of the 30th anniversary of ASICS’ iconic GEL-LYTE™ III series as well as the 20th anniversary of Tokyo-based footwear boutique atmos, the two labels have come together in a three-way collaboration with designer Sean Wotherspoon, creating the ASICS x atmos x Sean Wotherspoon GEL-LYTE™ III OG sneaker. First launched exclusively in Japan in June, the collaboration made its way to our shores earlier this month.
The unique collaboration features a pair of mismatched colour-blocked kicks, with the brown and purple-toned left shoe representing downtown Tokyo and the urban street elements of the city, where atmos was founded, while the right shoe bears a more pastel colourway, representing the hues of Los Angeles, where Wotherspoon is currently based.
Avid fans of Sean Wotherspoon are sure to appreciate the patchwork corduroy upper, with the rugged material almost doubling as an official signature of the designer, having been heavily featured in some of his previous work. Corduroy envelopes almost the entire sneaker, including the GEL-LYTE™ III’s iconic split-tongue throat, except for a small patch on the heel that can be removed to reveal the hidden logos of the collaborative designers. Each shoe is rounded out with a traditional ASICS rubber sole.
Sneakerheads can also look forward to an extra element of customisation with the inclusion of removable and interchangeable tear-away velcro patches — accompanying the shoes are 5 different-coloured ASICS vector Stripes, along with Wotherspoon and atmos patches to suit your mood. Each pair also comes with 3 different sets of laces, encouraging experimentation with the silhouette.
For those of you who may have missed out on getting a pair, you’re certainly not alone. Although officially released in Singapore on August 14th, the sneaker was only available for purchase using a raffle system, where only a lucky few were selected. However, pairs of the ASICS x atmos x Sean Wotherspoon GEL-LYTE™ III OG have been popping up on resale sites like StockX. The sneaker is also scheduled to be released at LUISAVIAROMA through the luxury retailer’s members-only Sneakers Club.
The ASICS x atmos x Sean Wotherspoon GEL-LYTE™ III OG originally retailed for $239 at Dover Street Market and Limited Edt, but is currently sold out in Singapore. It is scheduled to be released at LUISAVIAROMA on 2 September.
