It’s Time to Swap Out Boring Wall Paint for Instagrammable Wallpaper

It is a fact that we all love decorating and re-decorating our homes to give our living or workspace a touch of personality. This doesn’t just apply to the furniture or interior accessories but also the walls that connect and protect our personal space.

While traditional paint has always been the go-to option, there’s been an increase in the use of wallpapers as another viable option to spruce up the interior. The NYLON office recently revamped the reception area where we covered our boring white walls and gave it a refreshing change with the gorgeous Tilda Vintage Roses wallpaper.

Responsible for our stylish new look was none other than homegrown brand Hello Circus, an online home decor business (which started out as a passion project in 2016) specialising in the import of well-designed, eco-conscious, high-quality wallpaper. If you’re curious or interested in having wallpapers installed in your home or office, here are a few things we’ve learned from the Hello Circus experts.

Hello Circus and the Current Wallpaper Trend

There has been an increasing trend where homeowners and millennial parents are using wallpapers to create a themed bedroom for themselves, or a nursery for their children in place of traditional paints and wallpapers which often contain chemicals with high Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) and Polymerizing Vinyl Chloride (PVC) levels, making it unsafe for children.

Because of that, Hello Circus was motivated to stand out from the crowd by placing a huge emphasis on making sure that their products are sustainable, eco-friendly, and toxic-free. Their selection of wallpapers are printed using stain-resistant, VOC-free inks on breathable PVC-free paper to ensure your family and children stay safe from any exposure to toxic chemicals. The wallpapers are also recyclable and are Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified for being responsibly-sourced.

Long-lasting Wall Designs

Wallpapers are made with the intention to last and protect your wall, and a quality non-woven one, for example, usually lasts up to eight years or more. They are also a more cost-effective option than paint in the long run as painted walls do have the tendency of chipping and cracking over time, which would require re-coating every two years just to keep the wall fresh. However, as wallpapers are applied using glues and adhesives, it is not advisable to place them in areas that have high amounts of moisture.

Low-Maintenance Required

You can easily remove dust particles by wiping your wallpaper with a clean, dry cloth. Stain or grease removal is no feat either as you can be rid of them by using a damp, clean cloth (soaked with water) to wipe gently from bottom to top, following the direction of the vertical seams.

Versatile Design Element

Contrary to popular belief, wallpapers are a versatile design element that can be used in a number of ways:

→ as a feature wall
→ as an art piece
→ as wallpaper for the ceiling to brighten up the space
→ as lampshades
→ to dress up the staircase
→ to dress up bookshelves
→ for wainscotting (a combination of wallpaper and panelling)

“My personal favourite has to be the botanical Banana Leaves. It was the first wallpaper in my house. I first saw it on Pinterest which led me on a search for this wallpaper. My decision to import it sparked the beginning of the Hello Circus journey. It has also become one of the best-selling designs on our website. The piece is hand-drawn, and the strokes are blended so nicely. Upclose, you can visibly see the strokes like an art piece. It’s really beautiful in real life, and all our customers love it. It is suitable for use as a feature wall in almost any part of the house, and it’s also a great way to inject nature into our homes.” — Singhui Ng, Founder of Hello Circus
