Multi-Season Shows To Binge On Netflix

Due to the current crisis and with the safety of cast and crew in mind, a lot of our favourite shows have postponed the production or release of new seasons — even Terrace House is halting their weekly episode releases! If you’ve been disappointed by the postponed release of your favourite shows, we feel you. We really do. However, Netflix always has our back — so while you’re waiting for the return of a specific show, wouldn’t the best distraction be to start bingeing another one?

Here are a few multi-season shows for you to binge on, so you can answer Netflix’s constant question: “Are you still watching?” Yes, Netflix, yes we are.

Kingdom Season 2

Based on the webcomic Burning Hell Shinui Nara, Kingdom is the period zombie drama you never thought would work, but for whatever reason, it strangely does. As Netflix’s first original Korean series, it definitely set a high bar for every other Netflix original drama that has been released since. Through a few interweaving stories, the first season follows the Crown Prince Lee Chang (Ju Jihoon), who is forced to investigate a zombie outbreak that is threatening the nation. With a few twists and turns, the season ended on a HUGE cliffhanger, and viewers were left to speculate on what happened to the main characters.

Now that season 2 is here, will we finally get to see how everything played out? Will the zombie plague be contained? With only 6 episodes per season, it would be difficult not to binge-watch the series. Check out the action-packed trailer below, as it gives us a sneak peek into the bloody battle against the undead.

Ozark Season 3

The critically acclaimed crime drama is back for its third season, and it seems like each season is more intense than the last. For those who may be unfamiliar with the series, here’s a quick intro — following the story of an average family with an average life, they are forced to relocate to the Ozarks because of a money laundering scheme gone sour. We see Marty Byrde, played by Jason Bateman, attempting to juggle his marital issues along with trying to keep himself and his family alive, while attempting to appease a Mexican cartel. Sound familiar? Consisting of a similar premise of an average Joe being dragged into criminal activities for the sake of his family, if you enjoyed Breaking Bad, Ozark is going to be right up your alley.

Season 3 continues to follow the Byrde family as they dig themselves deeper into the money laundering scheme while trying to find a way out. The trailer gives us a glimpse of what to expect, concluding with this: “They are all in.”

Kim’s Convenience Season 4

If you haven’t jumped on the Kim’s Convenience bandwagon yet, you’re definitely missing out. Based in Toronto, Canada, we follow the every day lives of the Kim family, who run their own convenience store. We see the contrasting lives of the heavily accented Mr. (Paul Sun Hyung Lee) and Mrs. Kim (Jean Yoon), both immigrants from South Korea, and their inherently Korean-Canadian children, Jung (Simi Liu) and Janet (Andrea Bang).

While some have critiqued the sitcom, labelling it as “funny, but not funny enough”, I personally think it is the normalcy of the plot that makes it so entertaining. No story seems forced or doubtful — the show displays very plausible real-life situations. Their family dynamic is typical — even if you’re not Korean, I can confidently say that most Asian viewers are bound to identify with many aspects of the series. Whether it’s the daily conversations or arguments that take place within the Kim family, or simply the steady trope of Asian expectations and traditions being depicted in the series.

Money Heist: Part 4

Currently ranked within the top 10 most-watched shows in Singapore, the Spanish heist crime drama is also one of the most-watched series overall on Netflix. Money Heist is currently split into two parts, with the first season consisting of Parts 1 and 2, and the second consisting of Parts 3 and 4. Set in Madrid, after the global financial crisis, the show follows “The Professor” (Álvaro Morte) and his 8 recruits, all named after cities: Tokyo, Moscow, Berlin, Nairobi, Rio, Denver, Helsinki, and Oslo.

Now, we can’t promise that part 4 won’t end on a cliffhanger — every part before it has. But we can say this: once you start watching, you probably won’t be able to stop. Between the red jumpsuits, Salvador Dalí masks and the strong personalities of each character, I’d be surprised if you weren’t hooked to the show — each episode will have you asking for more.

Snowpiercer (Premiering May 17th)

By now, most of us have already watched Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite, and many have seen his 2013 English-language debut film, Snowpiercer. While he isn’t the director of this upcoming series, we’re still pretty excited for its release. Like the film, the indentically-named post-apocalyptic dystopian series follows the Snowpiercer, a train that continuously circles the globe, its passengers being the only remnants of humanity, seven years after the world has become a frozen wasteland. Compartments are divided by class across 1001 cars, with class ranks descending from the head of the train to the tail.

The series has a lot to live up to, and we’re excited to see what it brings to the table. Set to premiere May 17th, check out the trailer below.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba (Premiering April 30th)

While Demon Slayer isn’t new per se, the 2019 anime is finally coming to Netflix, and any anime fan would be crazy not to watch it. The plot follows the protagonist, Tanjiro Kamado, in a world where demons are a very real threat to humanity. With Tanjiro and his younger sister, Nezuko, being the sole survivors after their family is attacked, we’re left to watch his developing journey into becoming a demon slayer and to avenge the deaths of his family. The anime has great artwork, an amazing storyline, strong character development, and just the right amount of action, comedy and darkness. Considered by many to be one of the best anime of the 2010s, it’s a great series for anyone to watch, whether you consider yourself an anime connoisseur or if you’ve never even seen a cartoon.
